Simile question on annealing

I've been following an instructable to turn a file into a knife. For the annealing process, i understand i need to heat it until no longer magnetic.

Stupid question: after heating and then cooling overnight, will it gain back it's magnetic properties?

RD, IT will be non-magnetic only for above a certain temperature. Read the stickies at the top of this page. There's lots of basic metallurgical info in there. I don't remember what the temp is, cause I'm a newb too! There's actually a "how to make a knife from a file" walk through in there too! Good luck!
