Some pics of my old trusty Simon Stove, fueled by USCG Approved stove alcohol for use belowdecks and enclosed (but well ventilated) spaces. 100% METHYL HYDRATE (RechoChem is one brand) is the only fuel one should use in their alky stove, it is 100% pure and burns 100% clean, no byproducts or residue. HEET and other alky's have other chemical additives than are very dangerous to breath in. If your outside of course, disregard. I use thw Simon Stove inside when the power goes off.

anyways:

the Billy is a SS steel can i got from ikea years ago. I drill out bail handles adn added a wire bail. The stove fits inside nicely. A lot of people say alky stoves are crap in the winter . I overcome this MINOR issue by putting a tuna can under the stove and putting a bit of fuel into it. It warms up the stove very fast and the stove works very well in low temps. I have gone down to - 15 celcuis with it and boiled water for ramen just fine.Even without the under burner it works fine.

the Stove is SILENT, ODOR FREE (no campfire smoke) and with a bit of shielding, UNSEEN AT NIGHT. During the day the flame is invisible, one must be careful to not get burnt or refuel , until the stove is cold.

EDIT: this stove has been in my truck for years now, along with a 4liter jug of Methyl hydrate, box of ramen noodles and bunch of tea bags.

Hey, nice pics. I have a question about the last picture. About the razor blade, is it there so you can scrape the flint sparker?

Thanks

^ yep, the back of it works great, and i use to scrapo magnesium shavings when lighting a regular fire.

online would probably be your best bet.......i got mine locally at a ma & pa outfitters. They run about $15 - 20 bucks, are made from Stainless steel with an aluminum insert. The legs swivel inwards for storage.

which ma and pa outfitters did you get this from?

my trangia has gone to heck after being beaten up for 3 years and has developed a whole lot of nasty on it.

i would be interested to know where you can pick these up.

thanks

Incidentally, on alcohol stoves:

I got a surplus Svea stove (mil-surplus Trangia knockoff) that would not burn with a clean blue flame. It burned with a somewhat dirty orange flame. What had happened, is that cooking pots tend to boil over and contaminate the stove's fuel chamber, causing the stove to not burn with a clean, faint blue flame.

I fixed this by rinsing the stove out a couple of times with tap water. I then dried it by turning it upside down to drain on a paper towel. I then rinsed it a few times with alcohol, dumping the now dirty alcohol out in an old pan, to evaporate. After these few rinses, the stove now burns with a clean, faint blue flame, just like a factory fresh civilian Trangia burner.:)

For corroded looking stoves, just use Brasso. I Brasso my alcohol stoves once or twice a year, just to maintain them.

they may or may not have it, look in the cast iron pot section, then look in the camping section....they may not know what a Simon Stove is, ask for alcohol burning hiking stoves...

Methyl Hydrate is methyl alcohol methanol, or wood alcohol. The use of the chemical name Methyl Hydrate is not used here in the US. Organic nomenclature is always confusing. There is a system but traditional names still stick.
