I lost my pocket knife chasing a turkey this weekend. Instead of buying one maybe ill make one.
I have a nice piece of elk antler and some a2 sitting around. Where do i start? I've never tried to make one. I was thinking about one that the antler was one piece maybe with a slot cut in it. (if that makes sense):D

Well i started with a blade design. Here's what i came up with. These will be my first knifes made completely by me. (not buying blanks)

I have some elk tine to make the outside scales with and maybe some birdseye maple to make a spacer with. I need to make a jig to resaw stuff first.

Man i cut cut half a shape well maybe 40% of the top knife in a piece of 1/8" A2.
It was tuff. I used a die grinder with a cut off wheel. I dont know how ill cut the curves and stuff. I wasn't expecting it to be that tuff.

Well heres where im at.

marked em up. Then cut them out.

I guess next i'll clean them up some and drill the pivot hole.

Well here they are cleaned some and filed some. I did look at one of my books and it appears i have draw filed wrong. I did more of a sharpening style push on this not a pull. I will try again tonight.

They are not exactally like i wanted, but its my first shot at this. Any ideas or thoughts?

Those blades are nice Danny!!!!
You're gonna have a couple real sweet friction folders I bet!!!

How much of a finish should i put on them before i air harden them?
I was going to hand finish them.

well here they are before hardening.

I knocked the edges off with a belt sander, and man that thing can get away from you.
They are small and hard to handle. Next i will make a nice mideum size knife.

I am going to show my ignorance about making folders and ask a question. What is the purpose of the skinny portion opposite the blade, like a continuation of the spine?

Its a friction folder and does not have a lock blade. When open you hold that section against the handle to stop it from closing.

Danny when you get them done let's do some TRADING.I have'nt forgot about the drifting post,i'll get around to b-4 long for you.
Steve

Well i sent my blades to my buddy who runs a machine shop to harden and the package made it, but someone cut a hole in it and removed the blades. My first 2 knife blades gone, just like that.
Oh well, i guess i'll make one a little larger this time around.

It was the postal office. Go figure. It was only going like 30 miles. I was going out of town tough and was going to pick them up on the weekend.
