Simple GPS unit

Another happy Garmin eTrex user here (I have the Venture, and started with an older Garmin unit back in the selective accuracy days). Half the fun is downloading stuff onto the computer when you get home. I think it is a fantastic tool for a whitetail hunter, too.

I'm not sure about the H model, but the one suggestion I have is to be sure to get a model with the little toggle button on it. Last I knew, the lowest-cost model didn't have it, but the next one up the line did. It makes things much faster and easier.

One other note: The one and only time I depended on my GPS to get me home from somewhere in the woods, it crapped out on me. Luckily, I had a good old-fashioned compass in my fanny pack and was familiar enough with the area that it wasn't a big problem. Never trust your life to a battery-operated box of electronic parts!!!!

Stay sharp,

I would say get the Garmin Etrex. it's not very expensive and it does the job! I used that one for geocaching for a few years.

I have a Garmin E-Trex. I am with BrianGAndrews in that I use it secondary to my map and compass. I find that there are times when it does not get a signal in the deep woods or on cloudy days. When I am hiking in an unfamiliar place, I mark a waypoint for the trailhead, but other than that, I don't use it all that much. I found that I was spending too much time looking at it rather than the scenery. I am glad that I have it, but map and compass are the way to go in my opinion.

I have an old Garmin. It takes a long time (some days about a half hour in a clearing) for a lock-in on the satellites. My son has a new Garmin. It is WAAS enabled. That stands for "wide area augmentation system" if I remember correctly.

This allows the unit to lock in on the satellites and thus display your location swiftly.

According to my son, the WAAS enabled units also lock in on cloudy days, heavy forest canopy cover, etc.

What ever type of Garmin you choose I would highly recomend obtaining the WAAS enabled versions.

My 2 cents worth. Enjoy your unit and enjoy your hiking.
