Hey guys ,
Getting ready to order some stock from NJSB , mostly 80crv .
I'm just getting going, so I fully intend on sending my blades out for heat treat.

That said I would like to be able to put on a simple heat treat just to test the design and geometry before I make a batch to send out.

I did try to search it but mostly found debates as to what aust. Temp, soak times ect.
Trying to wring all that I can from the Steel will take a while for me to gather tools and experience and this is NOT what I'm looking for.

Just a simple heat treat that will produce a respectable knife solely to test design :)

Thanks all .

Paul.

From AKS - 80CrV2/1080+ ht

If all you have is a simple forge or pile of coal + hair dryer, try:
Heat to 1800-1900F hold for 10 minutes - quick carbon dissolution
Lower heat to just about above 40-80F non-magnetic ~1480F, soak for 2 minutes
Quench in 125-150F canola oil
Wash in water
Toss in freeze for 10 minutes
Temper (using AKS chart)

80CrV2 carbon is right about eutectoid point, plus small amt of vanadium to control fine grain. Essentially, 1800+F = huge grain but once below 1575F = V% refine/nucleate grain, hold there to stabilize before quench.

Do a few coupons, break to see AQ grain and file skid 350F tempered piece to ensure hardness is more than 60rc.
