Simple, high quality knives?

Yes, I had folders in mind. Price range I'm looking at is around $100 street. Cheaper definitely wouldn't be bad, but I had something with a quality steel in mind, so there probably aren't too many like that for much less.

My top suggestions have mostly already been mentioned:

Buck Vantage Pro, Spyderco Stretch, Spyderco Sage 1, Spyderco Delica, Kershaw Blur are all great production knives that can be had for around $100 or less.

Does the Buck Vantage Pro feel really solid? I've heard some early reports of way off center blades

The old Buck Vantages had the blade centering problem but from what I've heard, the problem has been fixed in the new ones.

It really sounds like you're in the mood for a sebenza. I never really understood it myself, but it's very understated, well made and anti-mall ninja.

Haha, the more I look, the more the solution seems to be an extremely expensive semi-custom. I tried one out in a store, and it felt great. I'm just not sure if I'm ready to shell out that much for a tool yet. The opening was a little stiff and slow, too, does that loosen up?

Vantage Pro!!!

I have several in the Pro and Avid model line. Solid lockup and tight all the way. I do have some that the blade is not perfectly centered. As long as it doesn't touch the liner when closed I'm fine with it. No impact on performance.

What you get with the Vantage (any of the three grades) is a deep hollow grind blade that is a world class slicer....smooth as they come. None of my flat grind Spydies come close to cutting like my Vantage Pro. You will NOT be displeased with its performance if you get one.

I've noticed lately that a lot of custom designs have really simple designs. Just basic flat handles, high grinds, liner or frame locks, basic or no texturing, all the things that mall ninjas hate and users have come to appreciate. So are there any well made, reasonably priced production models like this? I was looking at the new AG Russel tab lock, but it seems a little overpriced...

Sounds like Spyderco to me.

Okay, I'm reviving a dead thread here...
But, my thinking on some quality knives for bang for your buck would be:
Spyderco Tenacious - Around $30
Spyderco Resilience - Around $40
Spyderco FFG VG-10 Endura - Around $50

Kershaw JYD II Composite - Around $67
Kershaw Composite Leek - Around $60
Kershaw s30v G-10 Leek - Around $70
Kershaw Skyline - Around $30
Kershaw Blur - Around $50
Kershaw Storm - Around $35

ZT 0350 - Can be found for a tiny bit over $100
ZT 0400 - Can be found for around $100 - I LOVE THIS KNIFE

Spyderco Delica
Spyderco Stretch
Spyderco Manix 2 - AWESOME BUY
Spyderco Centofante III

Cold Steel Recon 1
Cold Steel AK-47
Cold Steel Spartan
Cold Steel Mini AK-47

CRKT Firespark
CRKT My Tighe
CRKT M-21
CRKT M-16 - You can get this is titanium for like $60

There are also a lot more knives of course but this is just a short list.

The Spyderco Superleaf is an interesting knife flying under the radar right now. 4mm blade (4mm = 0.157"), compression lock, G10. Looks like good bang for the buck.

A zombie of my own creation has returned! Actually, I eventually satisfied my itch with a ZT 0551. But the Manix 2 is still on my list, bladechick.

Kershaw Speedform II. Unassisted, non-flipper, same bladesteel as the 0551, for dressier occasions.

Just get it over with and buy a small or large Sebenza. Manufacturing award for something like 11 yrs is it now? You won't be pulling the trigger on too many cheaper knives after you pick one up. Sebenzas and Hinderers although pricey, have cured my itch to hit the BUY button. :D There's no frills - all business in a folder.

Couple of large 21s followed by an XM-18 & 24

As others have stated you sound like the kind of knife enthusiest that would really enjoy a nice sebenza they really are incredible knives.

I don't know if you can still find them, but the discontinued KaBar Dozier Thorn is well worth checking out.

I still have my Dozier Thorn. Elegant little knife. Coincidentally, the lock is a variant of the AG Russell Dozier tab lock Tsujigiri started this thread by mentioning. :)

I think the Benchmade griptilian with a 154cm blade is exactly what your looking for. i have one wityh D2 steel and could not be happier with it. A real no nonsense EDC knife.

The Griptilian is a classic, really a great working design -- look how many variants they've been able to sell. A similar model is the Rift. i didn't like the looks as much, but when I got a chance to handle one, I liked it better than the Griptilian. Excellent ergonomics.
