We all have a closet full of specialized survival gear and tools that we've picked up over the years... some we find very useful... others that wind up staying in the closet.. But what about tools or gadgets that you've come across that really aren't outdoor related that you've found to be most helpful or even a "Gotta Have" item with you? I think it would be neat to discuss this as there may be little tools or gadgets some of the rest of us are missing out on and so we can share our ideas and thoughts on such things.

For me... It's this lovely little thing
Brush-N-Brass-Tool.jpg

And it can be found here: http://secure.armorholdings.com/kleen-bore/product330.html

All it is... is a little brass rod with a wedge shaped (Flathead screwdriver) tip and a small nylon brush on the end. I bought 8 of them and keep one just about everywhere. They're a wonderful little tool and I find them very useful for cleaning a gun, scraping steel (as the brass won't hurt the steel), as a probe, seperating cordage, small pry tool, it's great at prying small things apart like cell phone battery covers to give you an idea, It conducts electricity, it can clean out your multi-tool or pocket knife, you can fold a patch over the end of it and use it like a little mop in small areas of a gun or whatever to clean it, the little brush acts like a tiny broom when brushing debris out of a small area, it cleans under your fingernails great, can gouge holes in things or even be used to score or groove wood. You can also reshape the tip pretty easy with the diamond file on a leatherman incase it get's deformed or chipped. It's got a million and one uses and weighs nothing. I bought one just as a tool for my gun cleaning table at home... and found it SO useful that I went back and bought a lot more.

Just thought I'd share... what harmless little nothing tools have you found that you fell in love with and always have around you? Pictures and links would be great.. I'd love to start a simple little gadget information thread here.

Ditto on the little prybars from County.com I have 5 of them and need to get a few more. They cost less than my Atwood Prybaby.

I have many small folders placed everwhere as well. These range from SAKs to Old-Timers to Rough Riders. No big deal if lost or stolen, but extremely useful to have handy right where you may need it.

I have the original. I can understand why some folks would want an even more portable version, but I think it's small enough as it is and don't see the need to limit its utility by shrinking it further.

I have used this little knife every day for as long as I can remember. I have even used it to strip the bark off of six foot long walking sticks. In thirty years or so I have only broke about two blades and often use it with the blade extended all the way out.

My most used little gadgets are either my County Comm Mini Prybar or my bottle opener, both are on my keyring.

Hive tool!

Don't know how I would have lived without it!

xacto.jpg

The classic X-Acto knife.

I keep one at my desk at work for various tasks. I've even mastered cutting 1/4" thick plastics with it (plastic automotive bumper covers).

One of the most PC knives ever designed.

I'm a nut for metal files. With some patience and skill, one can make many things with them.

I have a high quality dog bell I put in my pack, it is used as an alarm for my food sack, or as a "bear scare " when I am hiking through an area where it is recommended to make noise to alert animals such as sow bears with cubs. It can be used for a signaling device as well.i tether it to the bottom of my pack in shelters if on the trail so if someone picks it up, the bell will ring.

Pair of tweezers. I don't know why, but they are very handy, in my opinion. I use them everyday. Whether there be something in a tight space, or a bug I want to investigate, the tweezers are always helpful to me.

Swiss card. I use it everyday! Tiny, sharp knife, tweezers, scissors, it is super light weight-and for 20 bucks, well worth the price!
