Simple way for a novice to keep D2 knife work sharp?

Sharpening nicer knives is usually easier, thinner grinds and good Heat treatments allow for sharper edges and better cutting. Cheaper knives with softer steel's tend to hold on to burrs and be more problematic when sharpening.

When learning a new skill it will probably take 3 months of near daily practice to be proficient at sharpening.
