Since he asked so nice, I made him one

I was referring to his tantos of most of which do have a straight spine. Ben's seem to sweep up more on some of his models. From a distance they all look the same but when you look closely the differences become apparent and it seems most of your inspiration is leaning towards Ben's way of doing things as opposed to Phil's original vision.

You are just wrong.

Have you even held a real Hartsfield in your hand? I have many times. That "straight spine" was on his Kwaiken, Strong boy and sometimes on the aikuchi.

The Sori has been around for thousands of years, not just the last several years from Oregon. LOL

JParanee JParanee A man of great taste!

Can anyone else agree this a much more interesting conversation than just "nice knife" fifteen times? It seems the mods are intent on sucking the fun out of this forum as my infractions are growing so we'll be back to kumbaya pretty soon.

kam your a smart dude just keep it civil

The mods have a tough job and Lorien this forums mod is a great guy and cares more than any of us deserve

I love the thought provoking stuff just be kind

Trust me

So Phill invented the tanto? Is this what im getting? (Head shaking)

ETA: ^no one said this as JParanee JParanee pointed out. I apologize.

Knives and knife shapes have been around for centuries...its only in this day of age that someones ideas can be attacked. Who cares.
The more the merrier. Soon...there will be no new knifemakers because all the shapes will have been taken!!
People need to remember that all these new knives are because some older well established maker taught the new guy how to make knives. Usually of their design...for free!!
Chris didnt patent the RIL. Gave it away to every maker..for free!! This is one example.

There are only so many steels, and so many handle materials and blade shapes to be used. Jeez.
Give the guy a break.

By the way, not my style of knife...but excellent job!!!

No one said that so you can shake your head till you get a better understanding and do some research that Hartsfield and Lum brought this American version to the forefront

Emerson was than inspired by Phil’s chisel grinds

No Phill did not invent tanto or chisel grinds but he was one of the first to promote it in this country with his designs

I’m not guessing at this stuff

Of course not.

He he did pioneer the resin soaked cord handle and rougher finish tanto with a bead blasted finish.

While Phill took his to a 50 grit, mine was taken to a 400 grit and glass bead blasted.

I again apologize...i was not attacking Phil at all. Was just pointing out that tantos and wrapped cord handles have been around for a long while.
Not my intention to attack any makers, actually the complete opposite.
I have a lot of respect for knifemakers, just not crybabies.

AVigil AVigil

My original post was meant to defend you. I dont know you, but i do know that you didnt post saying “look at this knife I design and came up with all on my own!”
I don’t feel like you need to give credit to someone else’s design, especially when you were such good friends with Phil.
Anyhow, I’m sorry if I overstepped any boundaries.

Who is a crybaby ?

I think you just dont understand what this conversation is about

Adam makes a very nice version of a Hartsfield style Kwaiken

Kam made a comment that Adam should give credit to his inspiration which by the way he has done for years which is Phill

Kam made the comment that it was more Tendick like because of the Sori

This is all splitting hairs and any knife including Bens fantastic work in this genre that looks like the above knives are inspired by Hartsfield and if you do not know that you do not know the history of this genre

Please take no offense

No offence taken at all. :)

I have much to learn.

However, crying out that some style is someone else’s bothers me when it could have been said “hey that looks like so and so’s” instead of “plagiarism!!”

Kam and Adam got off on the wrong foot on another thread and it spilled over to here which is a shame

I agree it’s X Mas and we all should be positive and thankful

There are many makers making knives in this genre now and I’m very happy they are

Adam beautiful knife and great work

Adam’s work is beautiful. I agree.
And it was nice of him to take on a fixed blade for a customer at this holiday season.
Sorry i stirred the pot...i will retreat from this thread with my tail between my legs.

Just know that i have utmost respect for you JParanee JParanee and AVigil AVigil

Btw, nice knife, Adam. No way would I have mistaken that for a Tendick. My personal preference would have been for the swedge grind to coordinate with the other grind...or would that make it look like someone else's work. C'mon, guys, a Kwaiken is a Kwaiken is a Kwaiken. They're gonna resemble!!

Speaking of Bob Lum, he was a master of design and My "LT Tanto" is "Lum Tribute Tanto"

This entire blade was inspired from Bobs work
