(For the record, I firmly believe there's an exclusive place in hell reserved for perpetrators of bad puns, and I accept my special place amongst those wretches... but it's a great way to get a post noticed!)

Anyway, I just got my Paramilitary a few days ago and have been cutting and playing with it non-stop. It's a great knife and it will be at my side for some time come. However, the compression lock is really doing a number on my finger tips. They're aching much like they did when I learned to play guitar. Even with some decent calluses on a few of them (from years of guitar), and even with rotating the ones I use, the pads of my fingers are still a bit sore and throbbing.

Is this normal for this type of lock? Normal for the Paramilitary? Will it eventually "break in"?

Thanks for your time.

I had this exact same problem when I first got my Para and it definatly did get easier on the fingers with use.

I sped up the process by bending the lock bar back a little to reduce the tension and save the aching digits.

Nice knife for EDC, enjoy.

Hmm I just pinch the lock against the locking side liner and have never had any pain in the finger tips. I carried it for many weeks and used it often (My Spyderco D2 Para Mili) and never had any problems with the lock, but I have been playing Bass and Guitar for about 5 years now.

How exactly are you closing it? With my Ronin, I simply pinch the lock to the liner, index finger pressing the lock towards my thumb on the opposite scale. Then I flip it closed with my wrist. If I try to use only my thumb to move the lock, I find it much more difficult and it'd probably hurt if my thumb wasn't already thick skinned from firing my MT Scarab and UTX-70.

The Spyderco Ronin is a fixed blade. Maybe it's the Yojimbo You are talking about ?

Man up, get some thicker calluses :p :D

Seriously though, if you have a buffing wheel and some compound just polish the teeth.

I'm ashamed to inform you that I'm talking about a plain old flat compression lock here--no teeth to speak of:o. Are you thinking liner lock? Maybe I should buff my finger tips.

But I'm pleased to report that I can already feel the pad of my index finger thickening up and getting more numb.

Happy Easter to the believers and happy holiday to the rest of ya!

Uh, yeah. :foot: The irony is I posted that right after talking about the movie "Yojimbo" in the Community forum.

My fingers did the same thing for about the first week I had my first Para. After that it is fine. It just makes your finger tips stronger or at least they get used to it.

I wouldn't worry about it. :) Enjoy the Paramilitary.

I’d take the axis lock. I’m not to worried about the springs. I’ve owned a number of them and gave each a huge amount of opening and closing (sitting in front of then tv) and the only one that broke on me did after a few dozen openings due to a factory defect.

Too much Parastrabation. I had the same problem with my Para when I first got it. Your finger will get tougher and you will play with it less.

No teeth no problem, you can still polish any edges that seem to sharp. Making them round will lessen the stress on you finger.

I think it's common with a "new to you" locking system. My thumb was in some serious pain for the first few days after I got my RAM, but now it's not an issue at all.
