Most of the traditional patterns discussed here seem to be multibladed patterns, but I don't really like multibladed patterns. I don't know why, but I don't find much more utility in them, and aesthetically I like them better. Besides sodbusters, what single blade patterns are there?

Many - besides the typical single blade swell end jacks, there are single blade trappers, single blade hunters of various patterns (clasp and coke bottle patterns to start -- most are usually rather large knives though), toothpicks, and single blade "farmers knives" - often called a slim trapper (nice pattern with a slim serpentine frame). Take a look at the Case 31048 and 61048 for examples of the slim trapper in both SS and CV steel -- Queen also makes some nice ones in D2 steel. There are others of course, but this is a start.

I know you already mentioned clasp knife, zerogee, but the Sodbuster, a type of clasp knife (called the "Country Cousin" by Queen brand) bears mentioning by name, because it is so popular and versatile.

I also love single blade slip joints. I have a few from Mike Alsdorf & a Bill Vining.

You're right - though I wasn't really thinking of a sodbuster as a type of clasp knife -- I usually think of something more like a Case 6172 when I think of a clasp pattern (and indeed, the toothpick could be classified this way also).

Despite the utility of multi blades I often carry a single blade. One of my favorites is the Slimline Trapper mentioned above. Queen makes a nice version of this in their Utility Knife. I have an amber stag bone one in my pocket right now.

There's also the "back pocket" type knives created by Tony Bose and produced by several custom makers. I've got a single blade Copperhead, as well as a couple of CopperLocks. There's the Tidioute #23 and #73 from GEC. There are a number of Sheffield patterns with single blades (check out Worldknives.com).

Single blade jacks and doctor knives too. There are quite a few custom makers on BFC that are making some fantastic single blades from sodbuster types with all sorts of blade styles and creative touches in all kinds of materials to single blade jacks and trappers of every reasonable length. (Check the makers forum.) I really like the slimline pattern that a few of the production companies are making too.

You could not go wrong in picking up one from one of those guys. I do not own work from all of them, but of those I have been fortunate enough to pick up non have disappointed me in any way.

As well as the #25 from Tidioute, but I'd forgotten about the Sheffield folders (I do have one bookmarked, though).

Being a southpaw in a right handed world, I like finding single blade jacks with the easy open feature.

GEC has some new ones out that look great.

Also the single blade barlow patterns are occasionally found some new and some on the secondary market. And I would say 2/3s of the knives offered in our custom makers for sale forum are single blade. Also very nice repro's of older knives are avaiable like the Scagel #11 from Northwoods. Shrade has revived the old Taylor Cutlery Shark which is a pattern I love, very useful blade design. All one needs do is look...single blade slippies are everywhere' Here is a small selection out of my collection of just a few favorites...

from left to right we have

Sodbuster in stag by German Bull...a Scagel #11 (Northwoods)...a Taylor Shark in stag (now made by Schrade)...Case Tiny Toothpick in red bone...my Grandfather's Kutmaster hawkbill (AG Russell is making a brute of a hawkbill now)...and a Ken Coats custom 4" spearpoint barehead.

I too prefer single blade slipjoints. Trappers are one pattern that often come single bladed. So are barlows. The Laguiole knife from France is another that sports a single blade.

I just picked up a Case Swayback single blade in Pocket Worn Old Red Bone despite recently saying I didn't find the pattern very useful:o I have to say after only one day of carrying it, I do see the pattern as more useful than I originally thought:foot:

I like muti blades but perfer single blades. I carry a Case slim trapper (48 pattern) almost every day, have a couple newer yellow handles and a few older in bone, all CV steel, Good knives!

I like my douk-douk alot for edc at work. It takes a great edge and fits in the watch pocket of my jeans nicely.

I scratched my head and could not come up with a non-lockback Buck example of a single blade. Oh, I have a single blade Muskrat style Buck knife but someone took a bird knife and took out the gut hook. Makes a very thin slipjoint, as someone said "it hides well". But that is a modification that does not count.

Then a light bulb went off in my head and I remembered I had a few single blade slipjoints. So for you viewing enjoyment of single blade slipjoints I show the Imperial "Magic Knife" slipjoints. The hook in the tang allows a moveable pin in slots in the blade well liners to fall into place and hold the blade shut. You turn it a different way give it a shake, the pin slides down and out and the blade pops slightly open so it can be pinched and opened. You can still find them on the Aukshun sites. Found with printing on scale for advertisement knives. 300Bucks

What is nice about the Toothpick is they come in different sizes from 3" to 5". I have a large and a mini.

Most slim line trappers (Utility) are 4 1/4" with narrow blades

Canal Street produce a 3 3/4" Half Moon Trapper in 14-4 CrMo, which is very slim in the pocket and with a wider blade, and the steel is excellent.
The scales can be from jigged bone to stag or elk.
The jigged bone can be quite reasonably priced, look around
A fine knife.
($50+)

Queen produces a 3 5/8" Copperhead in D2, also available in a linerlock (Folding Hunter).
A good solid slim knife, not as fine as the Canal 1/2 Moon.
I like it.
($45+)

There is the Queen Swing Guard, which is a fancy slipjoint with a lockback.
Case calls them Cheetas

I do not have these knives..
Queen Tear Drop jack with a linerlock
Queen Mountain Men, you then jump into much more hefty knives at 4 1/2" with or without a lockback

Schatt and Morgan has Cotton Samplers in different sizes, steels, and prices
