single blade trapper

Here's an old scan of some Schrade-USA Old Timer trappers, including some single-blade models. Naturally, since Schrade went out of business in 2004, you'll have to scrounge eBay or other secondary markets to find one. They're pretty common though.

hey sam i agree. the pioneer really caught my eye too. almost like a nicer sodbuster. no? and what is the bottom one bob?

That's a factory error knife, an Old Timer blade matched to an Uncle Henry "staglon" handle. These were made as the factory was closing and the employees were hastily assembling knives out of whatever parts fit together.

Too bad you're only interested in one-blade knives. That bone-handled Old Timer Classic, third from top, is really nice. They show up on eBay from time to time.

its not that i am oly interested in single blade knives, it is i just dnt have one yet. the way i collect is i get one of each kind, thus the stockman, trapper, soon to be single blade of choosing, then i go back and buy knoves of the similar pattern. it is just a way for me to get every kind.

Makes perfect sense to me. Don't tell any non-knife people your method though, they'll think you're crazy. ;)

I know it's not exactly a trapper, but take a look at the Laguiole. It just might possibly be the most elegant slipjoint design ever.

the Laguiole is nice but for the moment i am 100% american made. case, queen, great eastern, buck, benchmade, etc. gotta help stimulate our economy correctly right?

Hey, that's the twin of mine!

Mine is 12cm, 12C27, snakewood ("amourette") handles, and brass bolsters. Beautiful knife. Just a little bit wide and round for really comfortable pocket carry, for me.

Bob W, what's the bottom single blade in the pic in your post (#21) above?

Thanks in advance,

here ya go sam...

FWIW, another one crossed my radar: The CSC Half Moon Pie Trapper. Despite it's name it is (unfortunately) not precisely 1/2 of their Moon Pie Trapper, which would be nice; The latter is a 4-1/8" full size Trapper which gets its name from the oversize endcap. The Half Moon Pie is a 3-3/4" knife with a more regular size endcap but an elongated bolster. They both appear to be available in a variety of steels (all stainless: 440C, 14-4 CroMo, etc) and handle materials. Here's a pic of the Half MP:

I haven't pulled the trigger on one yet, but we'll see what the future brings. It would be really nice if the company offered a true 1/2 Trapper. I think it would be an interesting addition, somewhat heftier than a Slimline, but not as bulky as a full two blade version.

Somebody needs to make a production version of a Back Pocket type knife. Seems a lot of people are looking for that type of thing these days.

you know i saw that, bu twasnt sure about the steel. im not a steel snob but ive never heard of 14-4 CroMo

Thanks for the info Bob. I have one like that but haven't seen any other before now.

Nice picture.

The other Staglon knife, second from bottom, also has an Old Timer blade.

Factory errors and oddballs were apparently a long-standing tradition at Schrade, but the market was completely flooded with 'goofs' shortly after the factory closed. An opportunity for an interesting 'niche' collection?

Here's one more, an Old Timer trapper with a standard pattern Schrade blade:

OK, one more, also a single-blade trapper.

Schrade sent a gift knife each year to select dealers, a Thank You for carrying their products. A different pattern was selected each year and the blades were marked with a special "Compliments of..." etch. Also note the sterling silver shield, the shield normally reserved for the Old Timer Classic models.

This one, however, is extra 'special'. Check out what they did to the backside handle:

I really like the Languiole knife Kamagong. Seems there is a huge variation in quality depending on the maker.

I had this Schrade customised with denim micarta and vine-paterned filework. Extremely pleased with the result.
