Single-blade trappers

Sorry for the late response Noddy, life got in the way, but your question was answered, it's a flat ground. I didn't even notice the shadow until you asked. I had to go back and double check. Haha!

The Buffalo Horn was completed in 2008 and it is the slowest of the bunch. The rest were completed in 2010 and are snappier. Not as snappy as my Case Mini Trapper or Peanut. Closer to my Vic Cadet. I don't have a Case, Queen or GEC single-blade trapper to compare to but I'm looking to fix that. My slowest slip joint is my gray frn UKPK. Then the Buffalo horn, then my Spyderco Urban, then the rest of the moon pies with some of the Vic saks mixed in there.

I bought these primarily as dressy food prep knives for the office and they work well in that role. I would still have bought them. I use the Vic Cadet/Bantam/Peanut for other jobs like opening packages/letters/etc at the office.

They are soft but not sloppy
Easy to pinch open and the spring hold the blade in place
No problem at all

My Boker knives are similar, as is my Case Slimline trapper.

Some other choices for the Canal Street Half Moon Pie.

First row: Smooth Sunset bone, Buffalo Horn, Red Stag bone, Camel bone
Second row: Mossy Green bone, Gray bone, Reclaimed Chestnut, Sambar Stag, Green Abalone.
I have one in Cocobolo coming in this week too.

Awesome set of knives!!

Where is the Bloodwood and the Olive wood?
LOL

How could I forget being such a Queen fan???

Their Utility Trapper 4 1/8", nice long blade, but becuase of the blade length and the thin bolster not for heavy prying work
Nice snap for those that 'need' it
You can get them in Amber bone or Maple, and they are very well priced at the right places

This is Forest Edge (aka Brown 'winterbottom' delrin)

Thanks!!
I didn't see the half moon pie in Bloodwood, I guess they're sold out. I had bought one in Olive wood but sent it back because of the fit and finish. It had blade rub, gaps, and a cracked scale. Too bad really, I liked the olive wood otherwise and got it for a great price. I won't waste the refund though... deciding on which other trapper to spend it on.

The mailman just dropped this one off and its going straight to my pocket. This pic shows just above the point where all my half moon pie trappers snap shut

Lots of great replies!
Those are some beautiful knives you guys have! I'm getting a lot of choices here. I'm finding myself mostly attracted to the slimline trapper design now, have been checking around, and am considering (to start with) probably a Case G-10 handled one. After that, there are so many. :)

I like how the Case and Queens have the sharper more traditional nail nicks than Canal Street. Canal streets have softer corners and swedges aren't as crisp as the others. Other than that, my ebony one gets the "worry stone" appeal. Very nice to hold while watching TV or the game.

I have since gotten a Queen Utility in Birds Eye Maple and a GEC Dogleg Trapper in Snakewood (yesterday and today :D). Here are some quick observations...
-The Canal Streets were sharper out of the box followed by the GEC then the Queen. The Queen had to be re-profiled and sharpened right off the bat (1 CS needed sharpening as well).
-The nail nicks, as mentioned, are nicer on the GEC and Queen but I usually pinch the CS anyway.
-The GEC is the snappiest followed by the others (GEC and Queen not oiled yet). If I were to rate the Queen with my 10 CSs, then it would be towards the snappy end (hope that makes sense).
-The GEC is really nicely shaped, it fits really well in hand, followed by the CS. The Queen is the slimmest.
-The Queen is the largest, followed by CS and GEC but none are small. They are all a useful length for food prep (cutting a hero in half for example).
-Speaking of food, I generally don't like to taste my blades so I guess the CS and Queen work better for me here.
-All around, the GEC has the nicest ff. The Queen and CSs all have one or two minor ff issues (a gap, or blade off center but nothing major)

I still don't have a Case slimline trapper to compare these to and it will probably be a while until I do (other knives are higher in the wish list). I will probably wait until the stainless GECs arrive before I get another #48. My next slim trapper purchase will probably be 2 more Queens as I can bundle them in with my next wish list purchase.

regardless of our preferances in makers this pattern is one of the most elegant & pocketable of knives this length. great in town & at home in the boonies.

2dead - thanks very much for those extremely informative pictures

(in fact, it just means that I have to buy all three, but thanks anyway :))

No problem Noddy. I don't think you'll go wrong with either brand and in fact all 3 are great.

I don't think you can go wrong with any of those mentioned. I'd go with GEC if I wanted carbon steel and Canal Street if I wanted a corrosion resistant steel. - Ed
