Sirupati comes handy in Afghanistan

Bubba must have been freakin' nuts to go after anyone with a khukuri.
If I found myself without ammo and facing something like that with only a steel toothpick I would do my dayumdest to advance to the rear so I could fight another day. :D

Mrs. WoodOwl and I both loved the story. Looks like that Sirupati is averaging one stitch per inch of blade length for each chop taken.Glad it worked.

I would like to post this one on the FAQ, if can get Pierre'e permission to do so. I am on the road now, so it may be a while before I can do a FAQ update. By the way, my traveling companion this trip is a 15" Sirupati by Bura.

To those of you who asked, go ahead. To those of you who did not ask, go ahead. Anything that makes our boys look good is ok with me. Uncle Bill, I forwarded your contacts to Bob and his friends...Hope you get a lot of orders.

PS: Clarification of the dammages inflicted>>>Bob indicated that his main concern was to bring Buba in alive even though he and 8 of his friends had been keen on sharing a piece of paradise with him. This goes to show the level of training and of self-control our guys have. I personally would not have the kindness of heart to forgive someone so keen on dispatching me!

What Yvsa said. I have a 20" sirupati, and in his place, I'd think hard about more effectively fighting another day if we BOTH had khuks, let alone a situation where only the other side has one! Nuts is right. Gorillas in zoos are smarter than that. He must of thought he was going to Paradise. Wrong! US mission accomplished instead.

Certainly comforts me to know the 20" shop 1 Sirupati mounted handle up just below sight level ( out of deference to the nervous nellie type LEO's ) behind my truck seat certainly ought to be capable of handling a mere carjacking.

You might want to pack a change of clothes too. ( no funny smiley)
And I hope neither is ever needed!!

Incredible story, Pierre. This HAS to go into the Khuk FAQ. As I type, I have my 22" Kobra by my side. This is one knife I will probably never sell, unless I break down and get Bura to make me a 20" steel mounted kobra with a wood handle.

Does a 20" Sirupati handle anything like my 22" Kobra? Lighter? Heavier? Any guesses, anybody?

BTW...what kind of sheath was on that 20" sirupati? I find that the sheath on my 22" kobra holds my blade way too securely.

I've only got the 20" sirupati at 26 oz. If I was asked to guess, the difference between this and a 22" Kobra is like asking what is the difference between shooting someone at point blank range with a .44 or a .38 . Both will do the job and then some, if you have the slightest clue what you're doing. I'd do my d***est to avoid facing either.:)

The Rai and Limbu people who have made some of the best Gorkhas over the years prefer the Sirupati.

Hey Pierre, any Chance to get a pic of the Sirupati that was used in Afganistan ? Just curious to see how it held up.

I'll bet it's better than new!!!!!!!!!

If that Sirupati was put up for sale with provenance it would bring $1000.

I agree. ... I mean, you CAN survive without a limb or two :p . Bob would have been more than justified to let Siru stretch his legs a bit (IMHO)!!!

I have not seen the Sirupati back. Bob is afraid I would snatch it back from him(rightly so!)but I was told that it did not suffer a SINGLE scratch. From what Bob described, looks like the cho can have a new meaning (i.e. blade twisting). Apparently, upon examination, the toothpick blade got partially caught in the cho and surrendered to better enginering. Bob was very suprised(amused) to hear that the blade is made out of Mercedes steel spring (or the closest car brand available). For info, the knife was a 20" Sirupati with a wood handle. No special preparation was made on the blade or the scabbard other than using a black marker and some black electrical tape to cover the brass plate and the brass guard.

The scabbard was waterproofed when I originaly got it. (I put the scabbard in the oven at 200 for a minute. It opens the pores. I then generously coat it with mink oil and let it dry. Buff. Repeat 3 times and add a coat of black shoe polish for good measure and you are in business. I also drilled a wee-small hole at the bottom, just where the brass plate folds so that any water caught in, will drain out)

Bubba's cut both on the arm and leg were to the bone.In fact the blow to the arm broke the bone in 2 places. In a single motion, Bob hit the R collar bone with the back of the blade (broke it too)and then hit the arm from L to R with the cutting edge of the blade in a slightly downward motion.ONE SINGLE BLOW! The blow severed the biceps and the artery like butter. {this explains the blood above mentionned). In fact had he hit a little harder he would have cut the arm off without much work. He said he was suprised by the easy penetration of the blade... even in the bone

The blow to the calf went downward ,parallele to theback of the leg and sliced all the way to the bone almost separating the muscle from the leg, taking a bone splinter in the process. Was it not for Bob, Bubba would have bled to death in less than 2mn. In fact Bubba went almost immediately into schock, due to the massive loss of blood. what saved him was Bob in-deepth medical field training and the fact that he was air-evac immediatelly. Considering the landscape and the reduced ability to land a bird, he is lucky to be alive. Since Bob's mission was classified, I can't confirm or denie if I saw the medical file and the X-Rays but OOOOUUUUUCH is the word that comes to mind. All I can say is that if I ever face a guy with an HI knife, all he will have time to see is the smoke left by my sneakers on the pavement! I'll probably set a new Olympic record.

One thing that came back sevral times upon debriefing was Bubba's question of what cut him and if all Yankees had been issued similar weapons....

To answer a question above I cannot comment on the cobra but it appears to be lighter ...hence faster. The sirupati because of the weight, is a very good weapon and a deadly one! [ what you loose in speed you gain in damage] According to Bob, even though no words were ever exchanged during the encounter, Bubba's eyes clearly did express the equivalent of " I'm f..." when Bob pulled Siru. After the first cut, eyes said something like "now I am really f..." after the second cut,the eyes, while showing mostly the white part still indicated " Now I am definitely...shorter!" [sorry Uncle Bill, could not help it!]

According to Bob, because of the great job done on the scabbard when built, it took him less or just about 1 second to clear the blade. Yet, he still remembered the way to place his finger on the scabbard (gave him the 5 c version when he got the knife). Thank to Uncle Bill, he LOVES his(my)knife. He said it works wery well for building a bivouac too.

I am looking a ordering a new Sirupati but this time no display! I understand now why some in the cantina live in caves....
