Can anyone tell me the difference between the sirupati and the SN1? They are both 1 lb 2oz and 15 inches long. Is the only difference the sword of Shiva etching?
Although somebody usually gets to these questions before I do, I happened to log on early. So . . .
The Service Number One blade is "fatter" (edge to spine measurement) by about a half inch to an inch, and it is, of course, the "issue" khukuri in Nepal.
The Sirupati has a thinner profile, and is also usually thinner in thickness (the spine is thinner). They are usually about a 1/4 inch (maybe a hair thicker).
Also, as you pointed out, the sirupati has inlay and engraving work along the spine, whereas the SN1 does not.
I hope that helps.

Nepalese khukuris are hand-made. The weights Craig gives are "nominal." Actual dimensions and weights are subject to some variation because of the hand-forging process.
I think this was a good question. I have thought about the same question when I looked at the khukuri specs. Craig, could you please measure weights of a Service Number one and a Sirupati (or possibly two or three of each) and tell examples of actual weights?
I bought a SN1 and a Himalayan Imports BAS. These are actually two very different khukuris. Besides being simpler looking, the SN1 is much lighter. When I got it I thought, heh this is almost like a Sirupati.
