Size Matters

Headiing out this week with a 7inch blade and a Sak, and a saw..as my blade set up..I'll let you know how it works out.

I wanted so badly to carry a large knife. I kept going back to one. I have finally come to the conclusion that if I have only 1 knife.... its going to be 5" or less.

Sure, you have to change the way you run your camp and burn your wood.... but in the end it's worth it, IMO.

Big knives are a convenience in a casual camp so I guess it depends on your particular style of bush living.

Its all relative.

Probably my RC4 and maybe my Izula. RC4 seems to fit my bill till I can get a more traditional custom bushcraft knife (if I go that route).

But I would sure be tempted to go with my shorter RC3... I just love that knife. But I think if were a "only one" knife (or one MAIN knife) I would like the increased heft and length of the RC4.

But you know, I have been enjoying the thinner blades of my Moras a lot lately too... so they may get a consideration. But after few weeks with "just" a Mora I would likely want some more heft.

I've tried carrying a couple larger knives, but I always end up with a blade about 3.5-4 inches in length. The only time I really prefer a longer knife is when filleting fish or when butchering medium or large game (deer and things that size). Even at that, I've processed deer with an RC-3 and it wasn't really that much too small for the job.

Generally I like a six or seven inch blade...5.5 to 7 inches for all-arounding...but lately I'm really liking the RC-4 which has a 4.5 inch blade. I've used it for general utility a lot, some food prep, and fire craft... with a firesteel and fuzz sticks and splitting and whittling out a hearth board and making the spindle. Its handle is a little shorter than I am used to but still comfortable and very functional. Being as its sheath offers the multiple carry options I like for now it would probably be the one I'd grab. but that may change after I get an RC-5 or 6, or get a custom made kydex sheath for a Schrade SCHF9.

Something around 5.5-7.5 inches would be suitable, however I normally prefer a 8+ inch blade, as I like to baton and chop things a lot, but that is when I usually have a small fixed blade on me as well.

For a one-knife scenario, I think the 6-8" knife is the sweet spot. Doesn't do small stuff real well, doesn't do big stuff real well, but it can do it all.

Quite possibly this one:
