Size of Square files ?

I have a question.

I will have to buy some new square files for a project, basically making a 3/8" round hole into a 3/8" square hole.

I have some tiny fine triangular files I used to do it once, but it was a pain.
I'm definitely going bigger and coarser

I'm going to go with a Bastard, a second cut and smooth square file set.

My local suppliers have them in warehouse a day or two away, but I'd like to eyeball them before I commit to buying them.

The trouble is that they are measured by length 4", 6",8", 10", 12" and so on.
I can't find any cross reference to their widths.

My question is:
with regards to square files, what length comes in to just fit inside a round 3/8" hole ?

3/8" across the flats will be too big in the round hole it's a corner to corner measurement.

This may not be super helpful but I always buy Grobet files. The exact dimensions are clear to understand. The files are not cheap but I find them to be excellent. I file a lot of hard materials like titanium etc and they hold up very well.

I hope it was ok to link to them, I was not deal spotting just trying to link to the information.

This may help

If you do this regularly what about a square broach

I know about broaches and I have one on my wish list, but a file is 1/10th the price.
If it becomes a regular thing I will definitely do that.

Thanks for the MMC link I didn't check there

Now I just have to do this math

I'm going to give 8" a shot.
