Would any of you Hogs who have both compare the Satin Jack Tac with the Hell Razor for those of us who can only dream of such riches?

I just found out I scored one of the HRs on the 'ganza, :D -of course right when Progunner has that beautiful SJT on the exchange- :( so I can't afford one at the moment, but I would like to try and decide if that needs to be my next knife. -And this with 3 Busse companies coming out with new lines!! Heeelp! I can't stand it! I've got the Infi-holism BAD!

C'mon guys- somebody has both- share a little Infi-knowledge!

i like the hellraiser better than the sjtac, but not better than the ho sjtac le! that has to be my favorite blade right now!(only because i missed the wardens!)

Hi, MVF
Sorry, didn't see this post 'til a few minutes ago. Other than the HR surface corrugations, lots of similarities between the two. There's not a large difference IMHO. Both about 3/16 thick, but the HR gets quite a bit of blade heftiness back by being 1/2 inch longer and about 1/4 inch wider. Along with a handle and tang which is a little wider and extends about 1/2 inch further than the SJTAC, there's a slight chopping advantage to the HR.

The way it boils down do me, then biasing for my type of field work (I'm a fisheries and wildlife bio - always trying to build or tear down something out of brush and small trees):
SJTAC feels great in my hand and is a great 6 1/2 inch knife. I like everything about it  . However, for working and making things in the field, I find it hard to beat the HR.

I think that the HR is probably underrated. Many of the Hogs don't seem all that excited by it. It has field utility written all over it without being so heavy that it will drag your pants down (so you don't carry it when you need it -- also, small enough, barely, not to seem like a "dude knife" to the uninformed :D ) Thin enough at ~3/16" to cut well; just hefty enough to chop ok; indentations in the spine fit my medium-large hands real well when I choke up and make it into a "smaller" knife for skinning; combo of dropped point, wide blade and indentations on the spine make it into a very good improvised draw knife, I've discovered.

Also, haven't tried it yet except on very small scale, but the shape of the HR blade is kind of like a small trowel which should work for those small-scale earthmoving projects, like digging your tire out of the mud when the mounties aren't around to rescue you.

Depends on your need, but you get some measurable extra utility without much added weight or bulk over the SJTAC. I bought a HR with regular scales, which is ok, but would probably get magnums if I were buying now (although small scales probably allow the knife to ride in the sheath a little closer to your body).

This may not be relevant here, but as I noted in another post - , IMHO, I think that the HR constitutes an excellent military field knife (expense aside, and for those who are willing to make room for it in / on their field gear), although some unit officers have biases against blades longer than 6 inches or so.

MVF, also, got your email, thanks for the info. I've replied by email.

I agree with you 100%, I had the Satin Jac Tac and did not impressed me as much as the Hell Razor. The fuzz should be over this model not the Jac. I don't know what is with the HR that the photos do not do justice at all of the handyness of this model. In my personal opinion the HR is a more versatile model than the SJTac.

So hows about a HO HR LE .... (i seem to be on an HO LE kick today..... must be gearing up for the HO FBM LE)

Let raise a prayer to TPTB at Busse Combat!!! :p A HOGHR that would be the new SFNO.

Excellent review, smithsnoh! I bought a HR and like this blade A LOT. I've been surprised too, that the Busse following in general doesn't seem that excited about it. It's great with the mag handles!

Cant wait to see one of the Mud Razors Naked! I personally prefer the look of the Mud Razor to the HR, but they really are both VERY functional.

Well, I have a HOSJ LE, and a tan Hell Razor as well as a Heavy Heart.

For an all day carry as a camp and hiking knife, the HR is quite a bit lighter and easier on my old 65yr. old hips, but when walking the dog(Rat Terrier) in the morning where there are a pair of Chow Chows, and several pit bulls I want something a little heavier like the SJ HO or the Heavy Heart.
I also carry a staff with a CS Bushman attached to the end and covered with a sheath as well as a 9X18 Macrov.

So: long carry= HR, short trip= HO SJ LE

Ciao
Ron
:D

I have been wondeing this as well and have been close several times to getting an HR. Thanks for starting this post and for the great reviews.

I have both and would say they are equal in their ability to do just about any task a knife that size would be called upon to do.

I like the aesthetics of both knives and I don’t know which I would choose if I only could take one. (So I took both.)

The SJ is a bit more traditional looking, like a hunter/outdoorsman’s blade. For me, the handle conforms more to the hand than does the HR. Slightly larger palm swell or contour, more to grip. Difference is negligible and just may be my particular knifes' grind.

The HR cries military fighting/survival knife, to me anyway. Has a longer and broader blade but slightly less swell in the handle to grip.

I have one other, a SJTAC LE that is much thicker and heavier. This I prefer over the other two, but they are were a limited run and are not available.

Since the HR and SJ are pretty much equals, it might boil down to which one you think looks the coolest!

But you can easily buy the HR right now if you want to and do so before they're gone and the price goes up on the secondary.

That is true. Availability! The HR is available from the store now and is a good deal. At this point, I would jump on it.
A SJ may set you back more if you can find a BUSSE nut that will let one go.

My HR is a bit thicker than 3/16th's which I like. The Satin Jack is a bit lighter, at least the two I have. This is not bad, just different.

For a knife to carry when I want one, but don't think I'll need to really hack away at stuff, the SJ gets the nod.

The HR is a great balance between weight and performance. And yes, they ARE available now, so don't dally, lest you regret it....and you don't want to be a Hog w/ regrets now, do you ?

:D

.

I find the HR to be more to my liking and I agree with others as to the wonder that others have not caught onto this one yet! A bit more racy than the SJTAC and "wicked cool blade!!!" (as Amy says) A sleeper for sure - grab them up while you still can!!

Me I got a Green one with mags and now the Mud Razor. I like them a lot - they are the SFNO of our time!

The pics definatly do not do them justice.. I recently helped a mate get one from the company store (tan/tan) and when it arrived I was very impressed. I got a tan cordura molle sheath made for it and when I gave it to my mate he was very impressed, he has a couple of good knives especially for a grunt, but the HR is definatly the best..

I was umming and aring over wheather to get a HR, but when I saw the Mud Razor, I new I had to have one. So after getting in on the gannza late I was very surprised and over the moon to find out I scored one. I can't weight to get this one and put it into use. This just may become my webbing/vest knife even if it is a little big..

I was thinking the same thing.

I should have a mud razor in a couple weeks.

I think I'm going to see how long the coating lasts, then it's coming off.

I think the mud razor might be a slightly better chopper than the hell razor because it has more mass.

I don't think I'll ever have a chance to get an SFNO for $250, so I think I'm very lucky to get a mud razor.

I've got a Mud Razor coming also.

Can't wait to compare it to the SJT and the HOGSJTLE in my collection.

I expect the MR to become my primary "user."

You'll be able to make room for it, Perksey. Aussies I spent time in the bush with had a tradition of what looked like 5 pound knives. :D Good score on the MR!
