SJTac & Gladius stripped with competition finish

TIm, how smooth is the gladius? Could you do some closes-ups outside with it please sir?:thumbup:

You bet! here you go, they aren't real close up, but the Gladius is pretty darn smooth. In fact, it has a lot less dimples than most other models.

And I say to for the BOSS Jack. I am not a fan of coated blades.:foot::)
I agree and so I did.

Did you hand smooth it already in the pic? What did you use?

Yes, I used 80 grit to start and 180 or 220 to smooth it. You can get finer than that, but then it is a little too slippery in actual use, especially when wet.

Lookin Good Tim :thumbup::cool:

"Strippin and Usin" makes a lot of financial sense ..... all my satin's are because the knife was only done in satin ....

Yeah, I am getting to that point pretty quick. I only own two LE's now and that is my first, FBM #4 which was a factory Bruiser as a favor from Jerry to Ronybear and an S5LE. Most of my other Satins were only available as Satin or only came with Blue/Black in satin.

Did it hurt the tip of the Gladius at all when it went through that drum?

Not at all, all of these pics other than the black coated ones are after taking on the drum. It did bend the very thin edge on my B11 though, but not enough to affect it's performance.

Wow totally SEXY!!!

Great work!

Thanks a ton for sharing your hard work.

No problem, I love looking at everyone else's pics on here and that is part of what got me so hooked as well as helped me to figure out what I wanted to get next, now I like to do the same for others.

When you say 220 grit sandpaper.....do you mean by hand? and if so, do you sand horizontally, parallel to the edge, or do you go perpendicular to the edge? just curious....they all look great!!!!

I'm starting a new thread with tips on this topic in a few minutes.

I guess that is more like a hand and 1/2....maybe two fingers!!

Yeah, a hand and a bottle of tequila:eek::D

Told ya T. I like that idea INFI in one hand and a cold one in the other.

Man, what is in the water in AZ? Ya'll aint even corn fed;)

You, Dave, and his whole crew grew up eating Wheaties:cool::D

hahaha, yea, im all over the place lately....
I think im going CRAZY!!!!!!

actually, i was thinking about the blade, not handle....wouldn't mind seeing someone hand sand a blade Gladius size......oh well, ill go to the maintenance forum for that!

Tim's got everyone stripping !!!! :D

I did these a few days ago, all I had was stripper and then wet sand with 600 grit. I think I need a scotchbrite wheel, hard on the hands/arms after a couple of hours !

Handshaping on SAR 5 with 200 grit and then 600.
The finish under the coat of the BWM had quite a few less dimples than the SAR. Gonna do some more "polishing" today.

Gladius is at Canada Customs according to tracking #, as soon as it's here it'll get the same treatment !

Thanks for the tips AZTimT !!!!

You are very welcome and glad I could help! Those look awesome and I like the smoothing on the SAR 5 handle too. Very cool! :D Scotchbrite will save you a TON of time. ;)

This is a great job, but I don't understand what you all have against coated blades! I love them, especially the all black ones.

Thanks! The smoothing was actually much easier than I anticipated !! I think I'll leave the BWM handle. Too smooth on a big chopper could lead to trouble.

I have nothing against the coated ones but I like using my knives and the coated ones look not so great after being well used. Personal preference I guess. :)

Well, for Tim and I, the competition (stripped, non-satin) finish works great for our users. I like the look and the functionality. I don't like the worn look on the coatings. The only coating that seems to stay well in our house is the sage. Everything else gets stripped :)
