I received an email from Stephen at SK Blades regarding a new 722 Spitfire offering. The following is from that email. I placed my order so there are no more than 27 of these left.

Buck had a few blades left from the Dark Hornet run so we had them craft this beauty we call the Cobalt.

Since there were so few blades left, we couldn't let them go to waste, but this drop has only 28 knives in it. So, if you can't live without the Cobalt, you'll have to act fast!

Blade: Black Cerakote, Drop Point, S90V

Blade Length: 3 1/4"

Closed: 4 1/4"

Handle: Blue Aluminum

Clip: Removable, Adjustable

$99.99 in the Shop!

looks great. gotta be a pain in the a to sharpen s90v with a recurve.

what's the HRC of the s90v that buck uses? 58-59hrc? last i recall BOS didnt have an oven hot enough to go higher?

I just wanted to share what I thought was a sharp looking 722 Spitfire. I'm happy to add it to my collection of "super steel" 722's. If this one is equal to my Dark Hornet regarding the build quality and blade play I'll be very pleased.

Have my fingers crossed the play has been taken care of by now as I could not let this slide bye :D

Attractive knife. But that price for 722 will make my wallet black and blue.

The thing to do is a blade swap with the 'other' new 722..Black micarta handle with the black super steel blade from this one. ...hmm. ..I like the idea that you have 2 'customs' for less than $200.00. I'm so committed to 112's I can't do it now but if I get a windfall I will.

For years I thought there was no real advantage to super steels. .although I did like a Buck that had a BG42 blade as it was the sharpest knife I've ever had. Then I had a 118 in D2..that was truly awesome! When Buck started using more and different steels I knew there has to be something to it. But since the vast majority of my Buck buying was collectable 112's that really see no use (my BCCI 301 in BG42 is a exception ) I didnt have much experience with new models and upgraded steels. But I like the looks of the 722 and think it will be my next big Buck purchase. .

I'am still green to the super steels :D But hope to see what all the fuss is about

So if it gets dull it's hard to sharpen? Or takes a long time? I have no experience with this steel at all. .So what is the up side of S30V ?

yep. unless using diamonds.

s30v is a nice mix of toughness, wear resistance and corrosion resistance. not the best at every but pretty decent in all three if heat treated properly and geometry is good for the task, etc.

S90V is what I meant to ask..Since the upcharge for this steel is significant it has to be a real improvement or is it one of those things that's just different maybe a little better?

wear resistance is way way above s30v, toughness is about the same. saw a graph by crucible showing that and comparing it to other crucible and other steels. lots of info out there on it.
