Skateboard wheels and bearings for grinder wheels?

That was my experience back in like '78 or '79 when a guy let me ride his new slalom board at a skatepark in Ft. Lauderdale. it had aluminum hub wheels with very high grade bearings. I went flying after about the 4 cones. LOL
I have abec 7 on my skateboard. I bought it one day went for a ride, started going too fast, fell off, and it has been collecting dust ever since. :D

Man this one was just to juicy to pass up. While I have not run wheels over 1 1/4" with these
bearings I wouldn't want to count the hours they have run day in day out for the last 6 years.
These happen to be grade 5 and grade 7. I have yet to wear one out. Makes small wheels
about $4 each.
Ken.

they make some high quality skate board bearings like "Bone swiss" just off the top of my head they are very good bearings, and you can but long board type wheels that arent conical and have a large flat surface just fyi

Skate products are like everything else, you get what you pay for. You can get Abec 9 bearings for sure, they are pretty common. Longboard wheels can be found in many grades, by durometer. You can order them in specific hardnesses. They come in many sizes as well.

I've never found any that are actually flat and cylindrical. I chose cheaper ones that were not lathed w/e and conical, probably because its easier to pop out of the mold, because the wheels need some modification. For idler wheels, they do ok, but so does a stack of 1" diameter bearings on a 1/2 inch bolt.

The old long board wheels are what I was planning on. Old school Cadillac wheels with some Abec 5 or 7s.

Ironically, last week I had to replace a bearing in one of the 2 sunray contact wheels I have.
All of my other contact wheels came from Rob at Beaumont (KMG)

The failed bearing came out of a Sunray 4" diameter x 2" wide wheel that I've been using HARD for at least 4 yrs now.

I took the bearing with me for comparison sake and when the gal behind the counter checked the #, it was indeed listed as a bearing designed to be used in............... you guessed it.................... skateboard wheels

I picked up 4 and they cost me less than $20 ( ~ $4.50 ea. ) including tax.

That same day, just for kicks, I went down the road to the local auto parts store. They had a similar bearing, and just from looking, you could see it was a higher quality bearing ................... $24 bones. For one ......

I decided I wouldn't need that one after just having picked up the 4 ;)

I built this grinder about 1982, thought you might get a kick out of it , that oak contact wheel bumped Hard, still have it and may someday get a real wheel for it and put it to use. Anyway you can see the skateboard wheels 2" wide and nice and square.

That is cool, I like the oak wheel:thumbup:

What width are the skateboard wheels?

Yes, you thought right.
My son was a pretty good skateboarder and got a lot of boards and wheels free from sponsoring manufacturers. We had boxes of wheels and bearings sitting in the workshop. They both wear out will little use. On a grinder, they would last minutes at the most.

I built a simple but effective platform to extend from my vintage bench grinder. On this platform I put a minimally modified truck from a skateboard. On this truck and on the bench grinder arbor I shaved down some halfway decent skateboard wheels and now regularly sling cut-to-size sanding belts over both wheels. It serves just fine as a workable grinder/sander.

It's not perfect by any means but it can go for hours.

Welcome to Bladeforums!
This thread is nearly 7 years old. A lot has changed in the "grinder wheel" market since then, and there are many more "economical" options available than there used to be.
At any rate, I'd encourage you to start a new thread with some pics if you'd like to share what you built.
