Skills for Fall Weather

My tip for fall, late fall in the woods: be seen.

Wear blaze orange. It's hunting season. This nylon toque cost me $5.00. The cotton hat was free. I bring both and wear according to the temperature. The toque I also wear to bed. You don't need a vest, but if you're going to have a hat on all day and night, it might as well do double duty.


1) For those SOUTH of the Great White North - a toque is a hat. ;)

2) GOOD call on the blaze orange. Gotta stop the trigger happy newbies from BLASTING you! ;)

I was born and raised in MICHIGAN and if my mother was not from the 'Soo' - I would have not known what a toque was.

and hey - every now and again it gets near, like 40 degrees in Texas, I am bald - I need a toque about 2 hours a year! ;)

I love camping and camping in the cooler months is my favorite! I'm planning to go camping Thursday and the low should be around 35 degrees with a high on Friday of 60. Perfect weather IMO!!

Remember to bring stuff to insulate you and your bag from the ground. I prefer a foam pad or a foam pad and air mattress. A lot of body heat can be lost through sleeping on the cold ground.

Herbal Tea and Hot Chocolate help warm you up if you are cold or just want to be warmer.

I like to eat dense fatty foods to help keep my temp up and give me energy. Chili is one of my favorite camp foods. Also Dutch Oven BBQ'd chicken and potatoes. Leave the skins on the chicken for the extra energy. Yum!!

A slim SS thermos like the Nissans or similar, pre heated with boiling water and then refilled with boiling hot chocolate prior to leaving for a dayhike, can be a lifesaver if your stuck over night or find some who needs warming up. The thermoses can keep liquid at just under boiling point for almost 8 - 10 hours, more if wrapped in water heater foil insulations. No stove required, no fumbling about if your already cold, just open , pour, let cool slightly and sip

there is a climbing book, Rock jocks & wall rats i think? where they eat nothing but blocks of cheese, huge garlic coil sausages, tines and tines of tuna packed in OIL and they still come off Yosemite with ribs sticking out.

* If you are in a two person sleeping bag, fart in it and hold your GF under inside the bag. She will appreciate you trying to keep her entire body warm at once.

*If your feet get cold, you can slip your feet into your jacket to keep them cozy at the bottom. Some sleeping bags just have cold spots that you have to account for.

*Don't be afraid to brush extra leaf insulation underneath your tent. Once you free all the rocks and sticks out of the way, this additional layer can keep the ground from sucking your heat away.
 
Being on a lo-carb diet (Atkins) for some time , darn right fat is my friend. Since I don't do sugar , I don't have a blood sugar crash either. I find I just keep going at an even pace.

I'm on Zero Carb right now (never been overweight, just doing it for health/experiment) and you are right. Especially with 0 carbs, there's no ravenous hunger mixed dieters are used to due to the blood sugar crash. It's easy to forget to eat. I make a bunch of pemmican for trips. Just dried meat and tallow (beef fat). Perfect survival food.

When i used to wall climb, i would eat close to 12,000 calories a day and come off the wall hungry , go into Britannia Beach near Sqaumish and go to 'Mountain Woman Burger" and eat 5 - 10 cheeseburgers. I weighed less than 120 lbs then.

Carbs drives insulin, drives fat accumulation. Get rid of the carbs and you will lose excess fat over time and keep it off (if you continue to restrict carbs). Just how the body works.
