First you start off by batonning his head and legs off(at the elbow/knee).

Then you make a slit about halfway up his back in the middle. Big enough to get your fingers in.

Pull opposite directions with the skin and free the legs, then baton off the tail.

Then you put a slit down his belly and up his chest so you can pull all the innards out. I also split the pelvis so I can pull out all the nasty stuff.
Now you got a skinned squirrel.

After this I clean them off with water, then soak em in salt water overnight and put em in the freezer.

Nice post. The Great American Squirrel, Rat of the Woods, Fodder of the Hungry, Barking Buzzard Bait.

Barking buzzard bait, lol, gotta remember that one.

Squirrel dumplings are about the best way to eat some tree rats.

And yeah glad the Randall finally got some blood on it that wasnt my own.

I used the same method except I cut the head and feet off after pulling the skin. I'm going to transition to your method, thanks.
As I type I am parboiling half-a-dozen of them critters.
I have used my model 16 for this job but have been using my model 28 or JK EDC lately.
Thanks again for the post.

What people do, is, of course, up to them. But for the people who eat squirrel brains, you might want to take a look at this post by our brother Hollowdweller.

Good post, Machine!

I do much the same method, but I don't rip open the stomach/chest cavity anymore. I just leave the insides on the inside, and use a sharp knife to remove the 4 legs and the "backstraps". That is most of the meat without the mess of gutting him. I just throw away the rest.

I'm gonna show this to PETA and make someone cry. LOL!

Always wondered how to skin, not that I'd ever do it. Is it
the same for say a deer, chicken?

sweet thanks for the post..

thing is there hasn't been any squirrels around my neck of the woods for about 2 yrs now, you used to see them jumping from tree to tree all over the place..

couple years back there was a mountain lion patrolling the area, we seen him come into our own back yard..

you think the mountain lion would go for such trivial morsels?? I'd say no before but what explains the shortage of squirrels, no ones hunting them around my house or I'd be the first to know:D

Im not sure about chicken but with deer I dont gut it. I quarter it, get the back strap out and any other meat I can get to. IME there isn't much waste and its alot easier than dealing with all those guts.

Nick>Makes alot more sense doing it like that especially if youre camping or surviving. Don't have to deal with getting intestinal contents all over it.

lastdaze> I wouldn't know bud. Seen an abundance of house/feral cats around your place? I do know the old guys around here talk about population booms every decade or so then the population dwindles again. I don't know if theres any truth to that though.
