Just wondering if y'all critiques had any thoughts? As far as design and profile of a skinner and caper set I'm working on. stock is 3/16'' 01, and they will be flat ground. Over all size is approx. 6-7'' w/ 3-3 1/2'' blades.

Figuring on nic-silver pins & liners, and prob. some stabilized red wood or spalted maple for the scales.

I like the shapes. Personally 3/16 seems a bit thick for the purpose, but some folks like it that way.

Personally I would take the hump off the spine on the skinner model, it serves no purpose and would look even better.

Dan, i was thinking along the same line they were a little beefy, but i was thinking on either skeletonizing the handle or tapering the tangs, to balance out the weight. but either way i kinda like a heavier blade.

Bruce, i initially shaped them that way , with the big finger grooves to allow for a man to use the blades with gloves on,and to keep the hand from sliding forward, but that kinda created that "hump", i think i could prob. come up with a happy medium.

thanks for looking and the suggestions

Andrew

3/16" is really thick for caping knives. I make them from 1/16" A2. Harden the hell out of it.

Caping knives need to be very thin and small to do the delicate work for trophy mounts.

Yeah what he said. If a caping knife is truly going to be used for what it is intended, CAPING, then it should be much thinner. It is very delicate work, no matter what the size of the trophy, and no added pressure to cut should be needed. I would say 1/8" TOPS. Otherwise all you have made is a small sized skinner.
