This is one I made for my grandpa for Christmas. He's getting older and had a stroke a couple years ago. Before that, he had an honest love for knives and hunting, so I know he will like this.

It's forged O-1, only the second blade I've hammered out. Well, let me qualify that... it's semi forged. There was still a lot of stock removal to do. I'm not as good as most of you guys. Aluminum guard, oak ply hard sheath, OLD OLD OLD antler handle that is cracked beyond belief but it looks great.

Your Grandpa should be a happy man. Anything made by hand has much more meaning than a store bought item.

Great job, you can fill in the cracks with super glue. With few exceptions most of us smiths do a lot of stock removal in addition the "stock moval" we do with fire and hammer. :)

What a great present.

Thanks, that's good to know. I always thought my HT forge could get forging temps, but I never tried it because even if I did I wouldn't have anything to beat the blade out on. Finally I did one on the concrete floor of my shop and on a piece of I-beam. This one was done on a piece of rail steel that has had a horn shaped out. I want an anvil, but it's hard for me to move 500lbs. Not to mention that a 550lb Refflinghaus is almost $4000.

I can assure you...anything that you make for your Grandfather will be greatly appreciated and admired.

Nice job.

He is going to cherish that knife forever. I cant wait until my grandson makes me a knife. He is only 5 so it may be awhile.

Very cool Taylor! I'm sure your Grandpa will be proud!

Unfortunately, both of my grandfathers were gone before I was a serious knifemaker... but one of my Grandmas is my biggest knifemaking fan!!! :D

Good on you for doing this!!! :)

You're in OK, there's plenty of anvils around there :D I used to work for Bonnie Plant farms and Tulsa was my route. I bought a 90# Sea Robin anvil from Chuck Robinson (Japanese cutlers style) and couldn't be happier.

Yeah, I think most of us have forged a blade on a rail road track. :D

that's great the stag has fantastic character. Grandfathers are great, they love anything you do for them, but even so anyone would be chuffed with that!
