I am looking to get my father in law a nice skinner knife with a gut hook. I don't want to spend too much, maybe 50.00 or less. Any suggestions?

sorry, no gut hook but check out the Green River buffalo skinner (www.crazycrow.com) 12.95 cheap but a GREAT blade

Buck has a few good offerings with gut hooks.

Never had much use for a gut hook myself though.

I don't use the gut hooks either, but:

The Wyoming Knife has a gut hook, that I've actually used. And blades are readily replaceable.

Hey Neighbor, in your price range I would recommend a company called Virginia Blade - they have several models with good GutHooks. Some of them retail for over $100 but you can find deep discounts on them pretty easily.

My best piece of advice is to skip the gut hook. It is only useful for 5 cuts (stem to stern, and up each leg). It gets in the way for all other knife uses. If you really want a gut hook, look at getting a "rescue hook" like made by benchmade.

I bought but havn't used yet the outdoor edge swinglock. the blade has a lot of belly for skinning and the flip side gut hook is a euro style large hook blade thats suppose to work great not only for gutting but for all the inside to out cuts on the hide and for deboning.
