I've been using that method since the late 1960s although I use a rock usually.

Yeah, that technique has been around for many years, and I've used it many times. Actually, you don't need a golf ball or a rock. Just make the forward cut in front of the ears and use the ears for bulk--tie your cord around the hide at the base of the ears, which keeps the rope from slipping off just like the ball/rock does. Once we discovered that we quit looking for the right size rock. On some animals and depending on temperature, it's nice to have a good sharp blade to touch the stubborn places to keep things moving while someone else operates the vehicle.
