Skinning

When out in the hills it's a Groovemaster and a Paul's hatchet for me.

Pork Belly back at camp.

I try to go light since I'm old and feeble.

Slightly modded Meaner Street works just dandy. I'm looking forward to trying out my 4" Hack and SR Vex next year also. I really need to work them into the rotation.

I have used an Active Duty for the past 3 or 4 seasons. Cut up probably 10-12 deer. I have never had a problem with it. I think I stropped it few times before last season but other than that it is just a pretty as the day I got it.

I did do one deer this year with a Swamp Rat Vex and it also performed perfectly.:D

I think that .22" Hack I got from the Easton Show would be a nice knife to skin with...

AD did real nice last year, before that was a Gen2 Howler for several years, both work well. (I have to admit, the (old) Schrade Sharpfinger is handy also.)

A few that find there way to the field with me, that I've used on skinning deer...

Tank Buster... Newest, had to try it out, cut through skin too many times... too much blade for my lack of finesse, my technique needs to improve... This will come with practice, and be a VERY GOOD blade for my pig skinning/processsing chores. Summary - perfect for pigs, little big for deer without practice.

Game Warden... handier, but just a pinch-small for me... I feel like I'm working harder than I should. My hunting buddy swears by his.

Skinny Ash-1... works on pigs, works on breasting turkey, works on deer, skill and slow required in the tight-spots.

SHSHII... The Precious... What's not to love? :) Good, but need lots of skill... so I poke it where I shouldn't at times... little big, but never lacking. :)

Original Howling Rat... Old Reliable. Stays sharp, handles any and all thrown at it. Resides in the 'place of honor' in my pack, never switched 'out', all of the others above are 'added to'... I love this knife - have to be careful to remember how sharp it really is, and stays...

Have'nt tried one yet, but the Ad looks to be about perfect. Nice choice Garth.
Nice buck also Kidstrick,

I have used both my GWs (.17 and .22), my Swamp Rat Hairy Carry, and my Spyderco Moran. Last year was my first hunting and I took 5 deer (including a nice 10 point) and a small hog but helped with about a dozen other deer and a HUGE sow. Since it was my first year I wanted to try everything to see what worked best for me. GW and Moran won!
:D

I like the extra belly the Cultie gives you over the AD, and consider it the best Busse for skinning Deer.
Also like its staright handle, and .125 width much better for this type of work.

If it's skinning, I just use my old Buck Trapper's sheepsfoot blade (doesn't punch through the hide). If it's gutting, just use a ML knives camp and woods knife and a saw or hatchet to break the pelvis. Don't need much blade really. I did gut one with my Buck pocketknife (except the pelvis obviously) on a bet. Took a bit longer and was messier, but I got'er done.

Are you talking about the "spay" blade or a sheepsfoot?
It would be hard not to punch holes in hide with a sheepsfoot.
