Im thinking about trying one of these blades out but cant decide between the two. Anyone have a preference between the two? Knife will be used for a outdoors/bush blade.

I have had both and find the Skookum to be the better of the two. There is nothing wrong with the BCNW, but if money is no object I think you will find the handle to be more comfortable in the Skookum as well as more functional.

I'll give another nod to the Skookum. Nothing wrong with the BCNW but the handle just wasn't for me.

I dont own either, I looked into the Skookum, if I recall it was a 16 month wait

Another consideration

Think i might try for a skookum put up a swamprat or busse for trade see if i get a bite:D:D

I waited 2 years for my skookum.
Nice knife but would I do it again?.....nope.

It was going to be my last knife ever. :D

I have both.
I'd rate the skookum slightly better than the other one, mostly because it has a thinner spine/is better finished.
To be honest neither is the "ultimate" knife some 'd like to paint. I often end reaching a mora instead (generally carry an axe with).
And yeah, there's a long line for the skookum (that said also heard waiting time for Ray Mears' knife is beyond ten years).

One of the reasons I like it too.

I had a skookum and sold it. Turned right around and got back on his list. Great knife. With that said, I actually have Tony's old BCNW and think it is awesome. Stays sharp, is nice and thick in handle, can take a beating and keep going. Much easier to come by too. So my opinion is to try them both and sell the one you don't like.

Is Rod Garcia even taking orders anymore?

Who knows? I've been on his "list" for over two years, and never have heard a word back from him. I'm sure I somehow got misplaced, or something, but I wasn't impressed with dealing with Rod. I've played with Joe's Skookum, and it didn't blow my skirt up honestly. It's similar to a lot of scandi knives on the market today.

This to me falls into the Woodlore "Lust" relm,

I have never found a knife soooo special in its design, fit and finish or quality that i felt it was worth waiting that long. A couple months yeah I can understand that.

Artificial demand = more profit for the knife maker.

Not to start down the brand wars, but i can get a off the shelf semi custom that does everything a Skookum will do for less money and wait.

I understand if your collecting a knife, I'm talking pure user

This YOU might be able to do. If you have an XXL hand like I do, the options become far fewer. My Skookum fits my hand like a glove. The fit, finish, geometry is excellent and, it is pure pleasure on the hand to work with.

Rod doesn't require any payment until the knife is finished and ready to be shipped. Throw your name in the hat, forget about it, exercise a little patience if you're young (if you are old, you aught to know better), and before you know it, the knife is in the mail. Been down this road countless times and it doesn't hurt a bit. Let the experience build character! Constructing a Skookum is a bit more involved than making instant soup...especially when you run a one man shop, have a young family and, get FLOODED with emails each and every day by a population of folks who want to discuss the nuances of knife making in great detail. Myself, I wonder when Rod gets the chance to even take a breath! Nope, I would have to get paid A LOT more than Rod does to put up with the knife buying public. I applaud the knife makers here! Special people! :)

Nice collection, HD.

Oh, I have one of his Skookums, and the wait was over 2 years. It is a very solid knife and I really like the integral butt plate, but by the time i received it, I had accumulated so many other fine bushies that mine is a safe queen.
