Fantastic knife. Blade on mine is pretty black from the patina now.. Someone mentioned the rusting of the butt cap. That was my experience also after a two day trek, while neck carrying it. It rubbed off easily however.

Or if you act stupidly as I have and go reverse grip and drive it into a cutting board with a wet handle (kind of like slamming your fist on a table)

My father came from Norway and was a serious outdoorsman. I've been using Scandinavian style knives since I was a child and have never cut myself due to lack of a guard (due to other acts of carelessness, yes). One of the things my dad taught me to do when performing the action you describe was to put the thumb over the butt of the knife. No chance of slippage that way. ;)

To X39, You are absolutely right, like most things in life the only way I ever learned was the hard way the incident happened when I was 16 0r 17 in home-ec class 11 years later I have a little more sense and would never act so carelessly again (at least in that manner) but It still doesn't stop me from being paranoid. That being said this is a beautiful knife, looks like it has great ergonomics and would be ridiculously useful just not my cup of tea as I usually prefer another traditional blade as my small slicer something of the Nesmuk variety

I just got an email from ROD last night..my 2 SKOOKUMS will be done in about 1.5 months!!!!! I ordered one in A2 and one in 3V.

Man, I'm loving the look of that bottom one with the edge that comes right down to the handle.

Thanks for finding that guys.

Would any body not using their skookum sheath be interested in selling it to me?
I would appreciate it!
let me know.
TIA
be safe... Ted

Would anyone be interested in letting me test out the SBT? I'm really liking the sounds of this knife. I'm in Eugene, Oregon?!

If ya promise to be nice to Her;), I'll let you test mine out. I'm in Spokane, Wa. PM sent.

Mine is supposed to be ready in October/November. Tan micarta CPM3V and some custom spine jimping for extra grip for my thumb.

I can blame the R.A.T. crew for that last preference.:D

Only time one is going to slip up a knife handle is when stabbing or thrusting. Otherwise normal knife use a guard gets in the way of many tasks. The slippery hands of a person gutting out game can be a hazard if they are not careful and attentive to the task at hand with a guardless knife.

Which type of steel did you owners choose?

A2 on mine. I Must say that I am very impressed with this steel and the way it is heat treated by Rod. Holds a decent edge, even with the relatively high grind on the SBT. I have an Alan Wood Woodlore in 4 mm thickness - grind at about the same height. The SBT holds the edge better AND slices better.

If I were to order it again - I probably would go with Danny's solution and order one without the butt cap. With the hefty, but comfortable micarta handle it is quite a heavy knife - handle heavy too.

This obviously opens the door for smaller knife shops who want to emulate the style of the SBT; for customers who do not care to wait. A win win for both customer and smaller knifemakers.
:mad:Rod IS a one man shop. Taking his designs would constitute THEFT, in my book. :thumbdn:

I choose O1. I have several knifes in A2 and love them, but wanted the ease of sharpening over edge holding. I have owned one other knife in O1, and was really impressed with it, so I thought I'd go with it over the other steel options.
