Okay, I know I'm late to the party on this one, but TonyM's recent pics of his spring hike got me interested in the Skookum again. I sent an email to the maker, but I am interested to know your thoughts on the knife. I see that the only handle options are micarta, anyone have any in a wood handle material? Can he make bigger handles?

I got mine a couple of months ago.
Love the very comfortable Micarta handle!
I have very large hands and the handle is fine for me.
Sharpest knife I own.
Very solid knife - the classic bushcraft knife.

If I were ordering one I would eliminate the hole in the blade.
I just don't see any reason for it.

I don't really care for the sheath but it is also very well-made.

I think the handle on my Skookum feels real comfortable. I have used for carving & bushcrafty stuff, no hot spots or blisters after a couple hours continual work.
The handle on mine is smaller than my 3rd gen Koster but larger than my fiddleback bushcrafter if this helps at all.

When did you order your's? I ordered one year ago, i hope to get it in two months.

Thanks.

dantzk.

I ordered mine in late March of last year and Ron said it should be a month or so more. Can't wait to get my mitts on it. Mine's 3V since I like it so much on my Koster.

Great! I ordered in late March as well. 3V for me too. I've never handled that steel and i'm impatient to see by myself all the good things i've read about.

Thank you for the information.

I have a past issue of "Wilderness Way" magazine that has a great article on the SKookum Bush Tool. I'm getting more and more interested in it. Especially since Spyderco's setback with their bush knife that I wanted so badly. I would also have to agree with the one brother to have one in CPM 3V blade steel.

The guy in the Wilderness Way article really loved his. Micarta would make an excellent handle for that type of knife. For outdoor blades I prefer Micarta or G-10 handles over wood.

I waited over a year for mine, It is worth the wait. Mine arrived lightsaber sharp !!! It is the sharpest knife I have ever owned. Edge retention is great. Wish the sheath had a belt loop. Rod is a stand-up guy.

Here's mine. Two year wait it was. Sharpest knife I own also. A2 steel.

Thanks for all the information guys, when Rod gets back to me, I am going to mention a larger handle. I really like the micarta scales too, very nice. Thanks for the info. I am definitely sold on this one.

Waiting on an email back from him, just placed my order. 2 yrs, wow, it looks like it will be worth it though. Went with a larger handle, A2, green micarta.

I've used mine a LOT and I got it not long after they were available. Back then they were like $150 and a 5 week wait:rolleyes:

Still one of my favorites.

Cant wait for mine to be finished.....Still like 16mos out. :(

I do have a terrasaur coming from Brian Andrews soon though.

An older photo (not my photo) from my Skookum file, but this shows another variation of the Skookum handle options.

An interesting photo of Mors Kochanski's notes while developing the Skookum design.
