SKS VS Ruger 480

It's not what the title implies- a shoot out between a revolver and an SKS.
Instead, it's pretty much the same question others have been asking but with a twist.

I've been trying for 3 years to save up enough money to buy a Ruger 480.
Everytime I've started, something has come up. A friend of mine has been selling great guns at great prices, and he's doing it again- a Russian SKS for 200 bucks.
Now, I need another Soviet short like I need another blow to the head- I've got two AK type rifles now. But no SKS. I admit, all this SKS talk has gotten to me. sniff..Good Old SKS- I've gotten rid of 4 or 5 of them, and one always manages to crawl back home.

But If I get this, it will be at least Christmas until I can even mount a sufficient sociopathic rationale to getting the Ruger- which is over 500 bucks.

Even then, I won't have the money- I'll just have my smile and my willingness to forgo all other goodies for months to come- a sort of in house debt program. I guess I could sell a gun to do this, but I'm asking for realistic choices, not fantasy.

If I do either or both of these. you can forget khuks too.
I can forget khuks for about 6 months. After that time, it is very difficult not to let another of Uncle Bill's babies come home.

I realize there are worst binds to be in. The future is always uncertain. We may not even be able to stay in Montana if politics continue at local work areas. Such is life.

I'm leaning once more towards the SKS. My friend could use the money.
It may be the Ruger 480 will never come home to roost. One of those always put off dreams.

Hey Munk!

What is a Ruger 480? I'm assuming a rifle?

After many months on layway I managed to spring my new Ruger 77 international. It's a .243 with the full stock. Looks a lot like my 94 Mauser but you can put a scope on it and it's WAY lighter! I think it is the prettiest and best handling rifle I have owned, although I love the old military rifles for their funkiness.

Else what's a Heaven for?"

(edit: found it! Andrea del Sarto, Robt. Browning.)

The 480 is a .475 cartridge the same length and pressure as other magnum cartridges. Thus it's 20 % more powerful than the 44 without being a pain in the ass.

It's available on the Super Redhawk platform.

I've had a loaded cartridge next to my bed for a couple years now- waiting for something to chamber it in.

Its a revolver. Big stainless steel piece.

Save up your $$ and get a S&W .500. I saw one of those at a gunshow last week. I shoot a 4 inch Colt Anaconda in .44 Mag and I don't think I'd even have the sack to pull the trigger on the .500.

Actually, if you've been wanting a Ruger .480, thats what I'd save up for. You can pick up an SKS when you want, but if you have some similar rifles, go for the Ruger.

A .480 Ruger is kinda a rare bird. Way cooler than a russian assault rifle. Big, slow moving, handgun bullets are more fun to play with.

I think Shann kinda said it, munk. Fill the gap in your collection.

If you already have a .44 mag, (or other heavy rev.) you might not need .480.

Also, all things in life being a circle, look how many times the SKS has come back to you. Could be karma. Can't ignore that. Or it will come back to remind you yet again...

Everybody needs a tricked-out SKS, IMH,H,H,O.

Besides, you'll be getting off way cheaper...

munk,

Buy the Ruger 480. Everyone needs a "bigger boomer", and the SKS is always going to be available somewhere. Now is the time to start looking for that pistol deal!

I finally bought a .454 Casull in a Taurus Raging Bull. Hightly accurate, lots of fun, and lets everyone know when it goes off. Have had it for about 6 years and it would take a lot to make me sell it. :D

You can buy the SKS sometime next year.....and then maybe another....

I have 4 41's, one 44, one 45 Colt Rifle and one 45 Colt revolver. Can't really argue I need another big bore, but the 480 Ruger was done right- you can fire it without any more discomfort than the 44.
There aren't many Russian SKS's and they didn't make them long.

The 480 will be around a little while- I hope

I don't want a Smith 500 it weighs 72 oz empty. If I wanted to carry 72 oz, I'd take a small carbine, not a revolver.

My friend is old and needs the money now.

That's pretty much the story. And yeah, I get a kick out of the fact these SKS's keep coming to me. It's funny. I do like them.

Follow the path of good karma. Help the friend.

I'm in a bind here too: The friend says the new guy who'll put the Mercury's engine back in right is coming by after work to take it to his shop. On the other hand there's a great deal on a new computer I could grab, and there's one gunshop with a Nylon 66 for $159, and a Saiga 20 ga. shotgun for $199 with a 3" clip - it shoots 2&3/4" and 3" mag 20's, but using different magazines.

Oh well, 30 days and 10 hours to go til solvency. I will survive - without using the credit card - I hope.

Time to shut down. Family coming by, and they'll need to call so dial up connection gets shut down. Later

munk, I say get the SKS, but if you don't.....I do have a C&R and money burning a hole in my pocket for SKS's right now. hint, hint :D :D :D

What does SKS and AK stand for in the Soviet bloc Rifles?

Do/Did any of these fire the 7.62 X 54 = .308 Caliber round?

Hope I got the 7.62 X 54 right. :o ;)

No, though there was a modified AK action that fired that- the draganov sniper rifle. Simonov or some such- the inventor SKS. Made a couple three or so years before the AK. AK took over. Same basic idea only the AK bolt rotated and locked, and the SKS was like a cannon breech- back and forth.

The rotating bolt, for engineering reasons over my head, is better condusive to auto fire. Chinese efforts to make the SKS a select fire weapon never worked out. I suspect the bolt cycle was too slow.

I guess this thread was a no brainer. My friend is on a budget and could use this bread. The price would only be this low for me. I thought maybe i could wiggle out of it and maybe even get a FF. But my decision this December for another Khuk sort of put the kabosh on that.

No one gets all the goodies all the time. We make choices.
