SKS VS Ruger 480

Jebediah;

Things just happen. The sks is a lot more friendly than the AK. Take an AK with you and you stand out. Besides, the SKS was my first rifle, and is generally more accurate than the AK.

I suppose the 480 can sit on the backburner for another eight months.

munk, I forgot that I think I heard you say one time that your still on dial up and when I put that picture in my last post it was supposed to push you towards the SKS. Sorry the picture is so big.

Your right about the Russian SKS's, they don't come around often at that price and they are a bit rare.

I think either one would be a good choice.

Carman- I have a fondness for the SKS, and my friend may need the sale now rather than later.

I'm thinking now if I sold my 44 mag and the accessories I may have enough to get the Ruger 480 fairly soon anyway.

Munk,

If you think you might want to part with your .45 Colt or your .35 Whelen, email me. It'd take me a few months to scrape it up, but if you really want to get the .480 this year, I'd love to have a .45 Colt rifle, and I would cherish the Kagihara.

munk,

As always I'm sure that you will do what ever is right. That is why I like you.

Normally I dither and fuss and end up (sometimes) doing something close to the right thing. I've been buying tools (old rust) and I just got hit by a chisel deal that looking back on it I can't believe I spent money on it. Such is my life.

Ain't it the pits when you do the right thing, and end up feeling GOOD about doing it afterwards?

I believe the 480 ruger is a "48 special" version of the 475 Linebaugh Long ( IIRC a case lengthened to 357 maximum dimensions ) that was shortened to standard magnum overall case length. ( Then again my memory may have absolutely nothing to do with reality, but that's how it goes. )

The 480 has the advantage of all the new ones in that it is the same size/length of the other standard mags and loaded to the same pressure. This, taken with the large diameter, gives 20% more power than the 44 mag and is really not much worse to shoot. It allows quick follow up shots, and does pretty much what I think a carryable revolver should do- large diameter, large weight.
Mags like the 500 do not impress me- too big a revolver. Mags like the Casul do not impress me- too much pressure.
The 50 Action Express has the right idea- but it is not suited well for a revolver and needs moon clips.

But yeah, you could call it a 475 Linebaugh special if you wanted. You also get six shots instead of five.
