Skyline deployment issues

Not only should Kershaw start using IKBS on everything, they should make a black/coyote fixed skyline!

I pulled out my 0561 today and after using the skyline this week, I appreciated the IKBS even more. It doesn't take any effort at all to get that big old blade to fly out on the 0561.

Kershaw should start using IKBS on the skyline, and all of their flippers for that matter.

Kershaw does not use IKBS in the 0560. IKBS is completely different and does not use captured ball bearings. The Kershaw/ZT system is called KVT or ZVT depending on the brand.

Thanks for correcting me, KVT is what I meant. So many acronyms, so little brain.

Yeah see, that's how I've seen other skyline's deployed, exactly like that zing....I can achieve the same results with the up/down technique, but I see there, you're simply actuating the flipper.

My observation is that the finish on the blade is a major contributor to how smooth/fast a knife is. My stonewashed knives are the smoothest while the satin knives with grind lines you can feel are the least smooth. I imagine once the detent ball wears the coating down it will get a lot smoother and faster.

Lots of good advice! You can polish the blade tang where it contacts the washers, no matter how smooth the washers are the blade tang is still coated in that ruff finish,:)

I agree with this though I will say that my Green/Black Tanto Zing is the smoothest non-bearing flipper I have. That thing is a rocket.

the bearings are press fit in and don't simply fall out, of course I believe that incorporating KVT on budget flippers would give an understandable and reasonable in my opinion price jump. The low price tag of the skyline is what makes it such an awesome knife, all you have to do to a skyline to get it to flip smoothly is simply flip it hundreds of times to break it in. If you just sit around flipping it while watching tv or something in the evenings within three days it will open as you want it to. I can't even count how many of these things I have gifted and I own 7 or 8 personally and every one needed break in time. eventually the pivot screw will work itself loose and need to be re-tightened to bring it back to center, at that time I usually put some blue loctite on it. all this polishing may speed up the process but it absolutely not necessary.

I need to give my finger significant momentum prior to it opening. Opening it by starting off with my finger on the flipper only gets it so far. I agree with IKBS ^

Quick update; after working the blade a ton, moving the blade back and forth, rubbing the detent, the dlc coated skyline is becoming buttery smooth. I can tell that with more use, it's only a matter of time before the blade locks up with quick use of the flipper. It already locks up fast with just the slightest little flick of the wrist. I love the black/coyote skyline...

Kershaw, keep the limited runs coming, lets continue to see different colors. It would also be nice to switch up the blade steel like that of the blur. 154cm, s30v, damascus, would all be perfect! Same goes for the fixed version as well. I have no doubt that they would sell like hot-cakes. Also, if you could incorporate some jimping on the blade, or handle, or both, it would be even better!

forum skyline is s30v, and they have already done a run of damascus with another one coming "soon". i would love to see a composite blade with something really high-end though. elmax anyone?

Touche, I'd still like to see some jimping, and a regular offering of colors. I've always been a sucker for black blades.

I agree with nosobrite - hes pretty smmmmaaaat. Try the pressure technique - it works on my lack luster skyline.

I think you just need to work on technique. The main thing is you have to build pressure on the flipper by pushing up and in so as not to deploy and then when you have enough pressure built up you need to snap your finger down.

If it is done correctly and the pivot is not over tightened it should fly out with no problem.

duro has been asked to leave the forum due to attitude...Think we can just move on here as well.
