Follow along with me as I stumble through this new process! Skystorm gave away a few of these kits about a month back and I'm finally all set with tools to be able to get this one going. Here's the start I got on it last night. I ended up stopping because I need to do the dye outside and didn't have any daylight. That'll be next, so stay tuned!

Here's what comes in the kits. First, the leather pieces, then the bag of thread, snaps, eyelets, firesteel shock cord attachment, and needles.

Here are the tools I'll be using. Not pictured is the dye, drill press, and sandpaper (maybe belt sander, we'll see).

This is my improvised compass I used for drawing the seam guideline. It worked well...next time I'd rather use a compass.

After the line was on, I used a stitch marker to mark where I'd drill each hole.

Then I marked them a little deeper, and slightly corrected a few, with an awl. I'll take these even deeper after I glue the welt on and fold it over.

That's all for now. I'll get it dyed tonight, I hope.

lookin good. They really are DIY. I have used I tandy kit before and it had holes pre drilled for you. but it wasn't that great of a kit. this one looks like it makes a better product

Leather is soooo addictive. Before you know it you will be getting the proper tools and perfecting methods, such a cool journey. Have fun and post pics!

this.

very cool. what color are you dying it?

It's going to be Fiebings Cordovan, which I gather is a really dark brown with maybe a hint of red? We'll see...

Yeah, I'm already looking at stamping / carving and have ordered leather to make a belt and pocket-knife sheath for my son. It looks like it'll be something I enjoy working with.

That is coming along nice, and Skystorms kit looks great ! If you want something with a more hint if red..try the Fiebings Oxblood. I've done several collars with that color and it really stands out !

Here's what I got done on Friday...complete with my bonehead mistake. :) I laid out all the pieces and wet them a little before applying the dye.

All dyed...darker than I expected, but I think it will age well, so I'm ok with it.

Then, I used Barge cement to start glueing:

Glued the welt in, roughing up the smooth sides, so it adheres better.

Folded it over and glued up and starting to get excited about the way it looks...

Oh crap! I forgot to sew the belt / d-ring strap and firesteel holder. Time to unglue. Doh!

The back piece I didn't draw out, so the stiching isn't perfectly even from the edge, but it'll be hidden in the end. I did dye the back of this section and the very top inside parts, too.

Tonight, I'll do the firesteel holder and belt loop snaps. If I have time (busy night), I'll reglue it and drill / stitch the sheath edge up. Otherwise, I plan on finishing it up tomorrow. Thanks for looking!

Thanks dubz and FC! It's been a fun project and it's about 95% complete. I now just need to finish the edges and find a good wax or oil to put on it, so it doesn't dry out the leather. It's really shown me how much work go into these works of art that Skystorm puts out...and I only did the assembly portion. There were some mis-steps and out of order things I did, but I learned a lot and know better for the next time I work with leather. In fact, if these kits are available in the future (tweeners...please!), I'll be ordering a couple.

So, I got everything glued and sewn and suprisingly only broke one needle! I drilled out the stitch marks with a 1/16" drill bit after the Barge had a chance to set up a bit. One mistake here, I lost focus and pressed the drill chuck into the leather at the top hole. It left an impression that looks like it's there to stay. At least I'll know this one was mine!

All glued up and ready to stitch.

Stitched and ready for edge dye and a couple of touch-ups.

Before I put dye on the edges, I thought, huh...it would be a shame to mess up this nice white thread already. I taped it off and that worked perfectly!

Unfortunately, it started storming as I was going to take this pic outside in the nice morning sunlight. Once I clean up the edge and wax it, I'll get some proper pictures of it in good light.

That came out awesome! I'd pick one or two up if I could find them on sky's sight :D

Nice work so far. I'll be starting mine this weekend, most likely. I've been having a devil of a time wrapping my head around the scout straps, and I'm planning on making a few of my own little tweaks... These are great kits for sure!

Those extra straps are what made me go with the bushcraft model. It's incredible what Skystorm does up with and pulls off so well. I'll be on the lookout for your thread.
