Can anybody tell me what you can do with slack grinding versus using a platen?

And:

I just put the ceramic on the platen for my Craftsman 2x42... but is there anyway you can modify for hollow grinding??

I use the slack belt attachment on my kmg mainly for handle shaping. It's great for the transitional area between guard and handle.

For me, it's the same as Mike. I use the slack belt for shaping handles. You can't get the same smooth organic curve for a handle scale off of a platen that you can on a slack belt. I also use the slack belt for convexing down to the edge for larger flat grind blades, for sharpening, and for grinding full or partial convex grinds, of course.

Yeah... my platen is removable for contour sanding wood and I plan to do that. But, somewhere, and I can't find it now... I found a reference to some bladesmith instructor recommending the use of slack grinding blades. It's a fuzzy memory so maybe I had it wrong....

As far as hollow grinding, you need a contact wheel, or make a platen that instead of being flat, it has the contour of a partial circle, say 8 inch or 10 inch, and cover it with graphite platen liner, I saw this in Blade magizine years ago, they used a piece of hard wood to make the half circle of. Never tried it so I don't know if it would work.

Grinding a blade on a slack belt will give you a convex grind (the opposite of a hollow grind). Alot of makers use a convex grind for the primary grind.

I guess that makes sense. Well... my grinds are convex right now whether I want it or not. I'm still trying to master the flat grind as it is.
