Sleeping!?

I've heard so much different info about whether lack of sleep is really bad or what. the last info i was told was by the CBC, so i'll tell you that, and you can correct me if i'm wrong: people that stay up all night, working on or visiting web forums, and don't end up sleeping at all, shorten their lives. the deal that i heard is that you get just about the same amount of awake time as other people, but you use it faster. like a fuse that goes down to almost nothing while you're sleeping. I also heard that sleeping 5 hours a night for 4 days, by the 4th day, it's like you're running on no sleep from one day. It builds up.

The reason i am posting this is because I want to know if this is true. I like reading the forums and sometimes, i have to give up quite a bit of sleep to get all the new posts, if i'm busy and miss a day, I have a lot of reading to do. hehe. I also noticed Mike & Spark were staying up all night, and they might want to learn if it shortens your life alot and makes your short term memory terrible, and makes you go bald, and makes you get shorter, and makes your eyes green, and makes your shoulders bright blue.

I enjoy staying up for 2 days at a time with the help of extra bright lights wherever i go, because the light censors in your brian(i guess eyes really) trigger your feeling of "I should be awake."... also, I goto http://www.thinkgeek.com and get all the caffeinated items. like the altiods that are caffienated, and the random liquids that keep 'ya up.

Ok, so I am not a doctor or anything close to that, but I've been doing some research in that area as I pretty much think that sleep is a WASTE OF TIME
smile.gif
.

Basically, there are various phases of sleep.
Apparently, the most imortant one, called REM is necessary for your brain to ... let's say recover from thinking ... - kind of like taking your car to mechanic regularly keeps it in a good condition.

The length of REM matters and as far as I can remember (could be wrong here) it is from one hour to three hours during your night.

Providing that you could learn how to fall asleep such that you go to REM quickly, you should be able to shorten your needed amount of sleep.

BUT WATCH OUT: we need REM on a regular basis. Staying up two nights in a row is probably not very healthy.

I wouldn't bet my head on what I just said
smile.gif
. But they are stories circulating that Leonardo da Vinci and other greatest of that world slept 3-4 hours a day on average.

Cheers,
Kris.

PS. How this topic is related to knives? Well, if one doesn't sleep there is more time to play with knives.

it is related to the blade forum. like when mike will post at 3:45 am and i think, shouldn't he be sleeping, but i look at it at 4:00 am, so i'm not either.

and noboby goes to the unrelated topic forum.

Hi Unocide,

My system is that I go to sleep for 12 hours every 2-3 days. Who cares if it shortens my life? I probably wouldn't have much of one if I was asleep all the time.

You know what's really weird?

If I sleep to much I wake up with a migrane.

Later,
John

P.S. I go to community alot! Also the moderators have already vetoed that argument so I am betting this is moved.

Sleep is for wimps! Sleep is for people who've run out of coffee! Sleep is for people who HAVE NO MODEMS!!!

More seriously, the amount of sleep you need varies greatly between individuals. A great deal has been published on the subject ... television and radio programs on science have to be simplified so much that even with the best intentions they have little value. Do some reading.

By the way, have you noticed how little sleep you need for about a month after buying a new computer? How long the effect lasts depends on how big an upgrade it is....

Seriously though, sleep is very important. It is time your body needs to "recharge" so to speak.

I read somewhere that a man broke the worlds record and stayed awake for some rediculous amount of time, I think it was about a month straight. His body could not take it and he had a mental breakdown. I think this should answer your question. Take care.

P.S. The longest I ever stayed up for was four days straight. And I am only slightly insane

I am going to make a post in the community forum to see what the longest amount of time a forum member has gone without sleep. Let's all contribute to the post. See ya there.

Unocide,

While in college, I got about 15 hours of sleep a WEEK. This was due to extreme insomnia and, of course, consumption of HUGE amounts of Mountain Dew and JOLT--hmmm...there might be a connection here.
smile.gif

I've been out of school for a little more than four years and I still only get three or four hours a night. Remember, men like Ben Franklin slept 15 minutes every two hours. That equates to about 90 minutes of sleep a day.

If you have a drive to succeed at whatever you do, you won't have the time to sleep. My personal belief is that it is better to kick off at 40 and be successful than to sleep 8-10 hours a night and be an 80 year old bum.

James Dean said it best..."Live fast and die young..."

I've gotta' go. It's time to do some work.

I am an entrepreneur. My sleep pattern is not the same as a normal person. In fact my sleep pattern is so different that I even went to a sleep clinic here in Jacksonville to try and get help. $800 dollars later and video tapes of me sleeping simply proved that I don't sleep like most people.

I take different over the counter drugs to help.

What happens is when my head hits the pillow, my brain wakes up. My best ideas have come from the moments of near sleep. I also find myself getting up with dry mouth and I go get a glass of water. This computer is on my way to my kitchen

My wife Lori has seen me many a night in here writing stuff for the forums. You guys see the time of my posts and so does she.

If this site is an addiction for some of you, imagine what it must be like for me. I own the thing and I feel an obligation to take care of it all times of the day.

I hope it shows.

Ah, sleep. ...'The innocent sleep,/ Sleep that knits up the ravell'd sleave of care,/
The death of each day's life, sore labour's bath/ Balm of hurt minds, great nature's second course,/ Chief nourisher in life's feast.' Macbeth; 2,I,62

It is a fact that different people need different amounts of sleep. However, everyone needs REM sleep, when you dream, every 24 hours. You can go without it for a while, but one of the most effective methods of breaking prisoners is to not allow them to sleep, and to remove clues (light through windows, clocks, street noises), or to distort the clues as to how time is passing.

After 36 to 48 hours without REM sleep, most people will become psychotic. Some people will say, 'I didn't sleep a wink last night, or the night before,' but put these people in a sleep clinic, and they are observed peacefully sleeping, although they are convinced they tossed and turned all night long and never got any sleep.

Another important component is circadian rhythm. This means your body establishes times for wake and sleeping. Since once this is disturbed, it takes 4 to 6 weeks to reset; as an ER doc, working days for several days, then an overnight, then a swing shift, basically an entirely chaotic schedule, I was constantly sleep deprived, and had no circadian rhythm. And had a heart attack at 49. With only one risk factor.

I would encourage any sleep you give up to be considered a temporary loan, to be repaid in full, with interest, as soon as possible.

You will probably live longer, and will most certainly be happier. Walt

I have also heard that what counts is REM sleep, and that actually only takes up ~90 minutes a night.

I generally sleep 3-6 hours a night, usually 4. I try to spend an hour a night reading (books, not the forums
wink.gif
)and that seems to be sedentary enough to count as rest.

Interestingly enough, since I usually fall asleep reading, I've slept with the light on for the last 20 years or so and I'm only marginally psychotic (compared to VG ferinstance).

It hit me when I turned 30, that if I were normal, I would have spent 10 years asleep!!! What a waste!

Hi Joe,

We have more "Water Joe" than I can stand around here.

I think it tastes bitter and "chemical-ey". I stick to evian and No-dose now when I want to stay awake and can't find any coffe.

Well, now I'm scared! I'm one of those who can't sleep more than 5 hrs, regularly 4 hrs. This has been the source of all complaints around where I live. I can tell you all these computer sounds and my typing are driving my roommate mad. Oh yeah, he hates me most when I sharpen my knives at 2 in the morning
biggrin.gif
. I've been doing it all my life I think, my Mom said I was a light sleeper when I was little. My big brother is even worse, but I believe that has something to do with his yoga practice. Another thing: I also only eat once a day. Should I be very concerned?

Alright, if it is dark where you are when reading this...

GO TO SLEEP. It's late.

since i'm a teenager and will sleep for upwards of 18 hours if left alone, i had to use Mocha Frappuccino's every morning for about 3 months, then i just decided to sleep at shule (school, spelled how it is supposed to be pronounced) and my grades went up. so sleep helped me there.

anyway, if i have a test in the morning, i bring a box of http://www.store.yahoo.com/ifive/penguin12pack.html in and i can stay awake for a while. if i have more than about 5, my hands start shaking though, and i can't fill in the bubbles on the answer sheet....

I just found this, i bring it to parties (of the LAN variety). http://www.thinkgeek.com/brain/bazaar/mart/cart.cgi?action=view&type=item&itemid=2818

I drank so much caffeine that my parents got me this shirt http://www.thinkgeek.com/brain/bazaar/mart/cart.cgi?action=view&type=item&itemid=2891

oh well, at least i'm not as insane as everyone else; 'ya know, they're all trying to get me. mayke you are THEY...

I work 2nd shift wife works 1st shift.Throw in a new baby and no one sleeps!after 4-5 days we trade off passing out time on the weekends. As to shortening the life span, cool! That's even less taxes I'll have to pay!(I cant sleep so I might as well look to the bright sideLOL)

Sleep theories change all the time. What seems to apply to me: If I get enough sleep on a very regular schedule I can concentrate better. My living depends on being able to concentrate intensley on material that can be inordinantly obscure. As I get older (I've passed my first half century) I find my memory and concentration suffer significantly if my sleep cycles are messed with. I try and get off the computer by 11:00 PM.

I've been working the graveyard shift for almost a year...and this whole sleep thang is getting me CRANKY!! Ever since I started the graveyard shift (11 pm to 7:30 am) I found myself drinking gallons upon gallons of BEER so I could fall asleep during the day so I could be up all night. All that did was get me DRUNK and tired. So...

I went on the computer and found Bladeforums!! So now instead of drinking beer and passing out, I drink and POST!
biggrin.gif

I need to switch shifts...

After 36 to 48 hours without REM sleep, most people will become psychotic.

Thanks Walt, I was wondering what was wrong with Mike...
