Sleeping!?

Along with various physiological effects, not getting enough sleep can lower immune response and cause people to get colds or flu more often (keeping in mind that "enough sleep" is different for different people).

My father (a psychologist and Human Factors person) did some performance studies on some test pilots using a simulator. He found that if the pilots didn't get enough sleep, their performance suffered, even if they reported not feeling tired as they went through the exercises.

Speaking of which: Hey Walt, any comments on all the stories we hear about how doctors and residents go 24-36 hours at a stretch without sleep? Is it true? Does anyone consider that their performance might suffer?
