Sleeps with Khukuris?

With regard to the non-use of force in Dave's case, Dave is to be congratulated. Hopefully the kid he caught learnt something valuable from this.

I find that it was and continues to be deplorable that there are still parents out there who do not accept the responsibility to instill in their children the principles of good citizenship. Near as I can figure, if you brought children into this world, it is your responsibility and no one else's to raise them, no exceptions unless one develops acute and chronic mental incompetence.

Apologies for the rant, but I figure that if each of us do not do our part in shaping a more responsible society, we're part of the problem.

Self reliance and the attitude to take care of the little problems are OK. Just remember to be careful. A friend of mine ran out of his house to stop his car from being broken into by the next door neighbors son. For his effort. His forearms were slashed to the bone with a box cutter. This was by the smae boy who mowed his yard for two years, went fishing with him and babysat his kids. The kid tested negative for drugs. They are still copeing with the situation and the boy is in juvinal undergoing "counceling". Remember even a tame dog can turn.

BTW I have my Ram Badure on a single stand by the bed, unsheathed. Alongside the bed is a 12 bore double. The Safe fireing zone in my house is across the bed to the door.

The thread has turned a bit sad. I am not sure what has happened but some -- not all but some -- parents clearly are lacking in their ability and/or responsibility toward the rearing of their children. The major bit of advice I hand out to my many, many young nephews is "take great care of yourself AND YOUR FAMILY!"

And bad things usually do happen in threes -- this is old pilot's superstition, too. Crashes come in threes.

Sorry guys, I got a bit carried away, but it touched a sore spot in me.

Uncle Bill, you are quite right about the parents and things coming in threes.

I think to end this on a good note one should celebrate the good kids out there in this forthcoming holiday season and remember that kids are one of the greatest presents that life can bestow upon us. There is nothing quite like it.

Merry Christmas, Happy New Year and Season's Greetings to you all!

Hi All,
Yes I do. One of my trusty "Villagers". Of course, when I'm not in bed it goes where I go....All the time. Yes, it tucks neatly into a tote bag, or into my laptops bag.

Harry,

This time of year I do think more about kids. I am happy for the good ones and feel compassion for the less fortunate ones.

"Sleeps with khukuris" imply, for most, something that is inherently sad. No getting around that.

Kozak,

I think you got me confused with Sing regarding not using force on the kid that broke into his house.

I too am appauled by how some parents don't seem to take responsibility for their children at all. I'm not just talking about controlling them, I'm talking about everyday care & maintenance stuff.

I have a daughter who's almost 3 years and another on the way (due in May) and I just hope that I can do better by them than I see other parents doing. Lord knows I try, but sometimes too hard which no doubt is just as bad

Respectfully,

Dave.

My Khuk is nearby, but not right at the bed. Where we live, I don't worry too much about break-ins. We are in the country, just outside of town, and things are pretty calm. Oh yeah, and that mean-looking Belgian Shephard sleeping at the side door helps to make me sleep better too...

'He's losin' it... (Words spoken about me by a visitor seeing me with my Khuk!)
Lucky for them I'm not...

When I started this thread it piqued my interest in two ways:

1) I wanted to know how many khuks, like pets, wormed their way into propinquity with their sleeping masters. A spiritual and bonding matter between you and your khuk. An aid to a good night's sleep.

2) I have the option of darned near anything short of full auto weapons to choose from. I'm also in a small town, which doesn't mean we don't have our potention Charles Mansons ( but is true most everybody pretty well knows who they are ). That doesn't mean others - say in New York City, in Massachusets, etc., aren't able to do the same. A khuk may be all legally available to them.

3) Child or Elderly or Handicapped Abuse, Neglect, or Exploitation doesn't bother me a bit anymore. I don't hear it, see it, or speak of it, and intend to remain in full denial that such stuff exists for the sake of my sanity.

500+ CA/N investigations, emotionally culminating in strip searching a six week old for signs of Abuse/Neglect in the embalming room of the local mortuary because of an exceptional FUBAR leave me the choice of denial of the problem's existence or extralegal measures that could get me in BIG trouble.

Sorry about the turn this thread took.

I have a HI WWII within reach as well as my Glock. Shotgun (unloaded) against the wall, guess I could hit someone over the head with it.

I also keep a 270 hunting rifle w/ scope under the bed. Hope I never have to use any of them!

I don't think I would want to use a khukuri for self-defence. Too much to explain to a jury.

Dave, sorry about the attribution. I think I got things straight now.

And I hit the wrong edit button too. Dang it!

Rusty:

I don't sleep with my khukuri but, I do have a 45 auto in the bed cabinet and a Japanese katana next to it.

Dido Bill, you're right. I should know better than to edit in the wee hours of the morning after being up 48 hours(work).

I have things nearby, under the bed maybe, or within reach, and I allways change up with the khukuris because I like them all. If I am scared enough or startled, a good fist in the face can help. If I am out running or riding the mountain bike I keep watch for sticks and stones if there are dogs around.

Huh! New feature on HI forum index page, there's 3 icons now in use to the left of each thread.

1) A folder.

2) A folder with a superimposed padlock ( signifying a closed/locked thread.

3) A folder with a yellow flame burning on it to indicate a thread with more than 35 responses.

Except this one has 37, but not a little yellow flame. Let's see if this does it.

Spark said he was going to experiment with the threshold for flaming folders -- looks like he's still messing around with it.
