Recommendation? Sleipner vs aeb-l vs 80crv2 vs 3v

I always break the bone with the back of the blade, I wasn’t even attempting to break it at that time, my blade was stuck I applied quite a bit of pressure to cut whatever my blade was caught up in and I ended up hitting a bone, the chip wasn’t deep but it was wide, I tried to finish skinning with my pm2 and ended up being a nightmare, the knife was a custom from a guy in Spain made out of 4v at 63hrc if I remember correctly, I can’t say for sure but I believe it was at around 34 inclusive. I hope to get better results with 3v and I think I’ll be getting the wood knife in aeb-l even though I’m pretty happy with sleipner at the moment. Thank you for the advice

Who ever said anything about anything being frozen? I said I don’t see 3V chipping on bone, and I don’t.

I’ve wailed on a 3V knife I have with wild abandon (pounded it through stuff you shouldn’t try cutting, at all) and it hasn’t taken any damage.
I have never seen a moose season where it wasn't really cold out lol, but I guess I don't know where the OP is. But where I live it's usually -5 on the warm end, to -40, with -15-20 being average. That's in Celsius, mind you. Either way, even when it's warm, I would use the spine as a bone breaker if I had to.

Hey man, glad to hear you have something you like now. I think AEB-L is a great choice to go with Sleipner. Remember, apocalypse/disaster aside, worse case scenario is you have to buy and enjoy a new knife if you don't like the one you got. What a tragedy! Let us know how those work out for you, I'd like to hear more about AEB-L and see how it stacks up with 14C28N.

Dergyll Dergyll That's an insane review, can't believe I forgot those boys, lol... It does seem like quite a knife though, I just wish I knew for sure whether the spine was squared, or not, I have Moras that are squared, and on this type of knife, it'd be a given, I would hope, to make kindling with the 90 deg. spine.

The spine is smooth and won't strike a steel. I grinded a section with my sharpening stone to strike a steel ;)

Ah, I am fixing to do the same thing. You have it? How do you like it? I've been picturing 3V in my head as a beefed up Cruwear, kind of.

I bought it when it came out, it screamed "good deal" to me...3V EDC fixed blade for 116$? Sign me up.

My batch had a lower RC...you can watch some of Cedric and Ada videos about the BM Puukko. The toughness is superb, but the edge retention is just so-so. Mine has awesome corrosion resistance, for whatever reason...maybe the smooth stomewashing?

CRUWEAR will definitely hold an edge better, but won't match 3V in toughness, and corrodes easier.

I've taken this knife everywhere with me, and it sharpens...very easy, like CPM154. I consider it to be probably one of the best knife for the bucks.

Edit: also the rubber handle goes all around the knife and is very comfortable even in cold weather. Sheath is kind if crappy, I'd get a better aftermarket one for sure.

3 choices:

Tough, easy to get sharp and cheap - 80CrV2

More stainless, tougher and more edge retenion but more expensive - 3V

Stainless - AEB-L

I'd either go for 3V if I have the money or just get 80CrV2 if I want something affordable.

Many knives I have seen in cutting contests had CPM-M390 or CPM-M4 steel. Here is the Lion Steel hunter and Bark River that I like.
