My good friend Marty Simon carries his USGI canteen on a shoulder strap. His canvas pouch has been modded to carry firesteel, whistle, first aid kit and more. The USGI canteen and cup has been a staple piece of gear for me but I never was satisfied with the way my Eagle Industries canteen pouch held it on my belt. It always flopped to the side and didn't hold it low enough to prevent it. Seeing Marty's again recently made me say, "F' it!" and I decided to do a quick mod.
Using the leftover guts from a AMK Ritter Pocket Survival Kit, I used the line as sewing thread. With a few small lengths of webbing, I sewed it to the pouch and used a couple of D rings from a hardware store as the anchor point. The strap is the one included with my Kifaru Tailgunner II that I never use so that was pressed into service. The end result? An easy way to carry my kit.
What I keep in it?
Stainless Canteen
Stainless Canteen Cup (Dated 1945!)
AMK Heat Sheet
BSA Hotspark and Sparklite with tinder
Reynolds oven bag
MP1 Tablets
Orion Whistle
6' of paracord through original belt attachment
BRKT Trickle Knife
With this set up, I have the means to start a fire, purify water, build a shelter, signal for help, store water, lash and much more.
