I have this old humidor made out of figured cherry. Since I can't smoke anymore, I thought maybe adapt if for use as a storage/display box for my slip joints? I could stick desiccants in it.
What do you guys think?

I think it's a great re-purposing of a quality box. Does it still smell of cigars? If so it may impart some odor to your knives. Maybe not though, idk.
Thanks, Neal

Thanks Neal. Yes, it does still smell (wonderfully) of cigars. One adaptation would be to get that smell aired out. I don't think knives should smell like cigars or vice versa!

Very nice item, too nice not too be used on something.

I'm cursed with really dry indoors during the long winter months, sometimes just 8% humidity :eek: Stag, Bone, Wood and notably Horn dislike this arid environment and I have to use a humidifier to stop shrink. So a humidor could be a really good idea for important pieces that don't like the dry.

That is a gorgeous humidor that I definitely think should be repurposed for your knife storage! Any rough guesstimate on how many knives it could store?

You could commission a cabinet maker to make stackable trays geared more towards knives. Spanish cedar would keep the humidor theme alive

What a fantastic idea!

I am not so certain that airing out a humidor will remove the smell of cigars though (perish the thought), as there are oils and what not that exist from the humidor's former denizens. I do not find the scent of cigars to be unpleasant however, though that is a rather subjective opinion on my part. I suppose that certain handle materials might absorb the smells and that could be a concern.

Regardless, it is a wonderful concept and I am looking forward to seeing what you make of it.

Good points. You can see in the photo I had a battery powered humidistat in there. Hope it still works. I would want to try to achieve about 35-40%.

Hmm. I hope this doesn't get posted twice. If it airs out a little, I will start putting knives in it, at least to see how it works. It's bigger than it looks. About 20" L, 11" deep and 12" tall. It has two level with two trays. So, I could see 24 knives in there?

Thanks. I like the ideas all of you have come up with. I agree, the smell of cigars will never entirely go away. But, I kind of like it too. I suspect the oil on my knives would absorb some smell, but I don't think the cover materials would?< Not sure of course.

Another possibility yes, thanks Txjohn. The trays in there now are cedar. I was going to cut pieces of 1/4 black dense foam I use for tool boxes and lay in there to keep the knives from falling through.

Maybe new trays would get rid of at least some of the cigar smell too?

Personally, I would like the cigar smell and discourage trying to eliminate it. :D  That's a nice storage box.
I would even think about slipping a pouch of pipe tobacco in the box to enhance the flavor. :D

I'm with you on that Bob. But, Mrs. Shearer has a different point of view;)

A box that nice needs to be used for something Alan . I suspect that with a small amount of work , you could stack numerous trays in the box that would hold more than the 24 you mention. If SWMBO does not want pipe tobacco in it , then it is what it is and you go on from there . Check out being able to get Cigar Boxes as a start and see if some of them will fit into it. I have seen some that had only single layers of cigars in them . Try to reduce the smell with some charcoal in it for a while.

CHARCOAL!! Harry that might be genius. And you're right it's probably deeper than I need. I might get three or four layers in it. Thanks !

Very nice Alan, I love the repurpose and Original purpose of the humidor:D

What ever direction you go it will be a wonderful storage system. If my knives smelled of cigars I'd be a happy camper:o:thumbup:

Great idea for a former humidor. And congratulations on not smoking any longer!

Those of you who saw my original post about re-purposing my old humidor to store my traditional knives.

I took it to a local woodworker and had him cut the original two trays into four trays and put solid bottoms in them.

Here are a couple shots of the original and the almost finished product. I say almost because I am going to line the trays with felt.

Thanks guys for your ideas and input. This is going to make a great display and storage for my growing traditional collection.
