Going to start bringing this little chopper up to snuff. It's True Temper, Kelly Perfect my dad found at a junk shop a few years ago for $3.00. His re-handle project spurred me on to work on this little dandy. The head needs just a tiny bit of work, but I really think the handle is in GREAT shape, LOL. Here are pics of the victim:

I've been eyeballing a few double bits on the bay right now. This looks like a real project. What are your plans with it? Thinking about making it a wall hanger? Something functional?

Anyone here refurb one of these? Maybe a Collins?

This is my little axe project on the go, my grandfather claimed that he found it buried in a mud hole off his trapline. He gave it to me when i was 15, i am going to put a new handle on it and clean it up, there are no identification marks on it, but i find it has lots of personality.

Good luck with your project man.

I plan on making a user out of it. Not sure how much use I will give it, but it will be ready nonetheless. I saw the same model head on ebay going at around $30 with some time left, not sure what it ended at.

Awesome projects, both of ya. I love stuff like that. Looking forward to progress reports.

My next is to restore an old draw knife that was my grandfathers. Don't know what I'll do with it when its done but it'll keep me busy over the winter.

Make a bow!

Old draw knives are found at flea markets all over the place, the main problem that I see is that they've ususlly been sharpened over and over and the resulting angle is way too steep for effective cutting. If you decide to refurbish one try to get that main bevel angle down a bit otherwise it'll be like trying to slice paper thin tomato slices with a stock Battle Mistress. (no offense to you Busse lovers out there;)) It might take a good deal of grinding but a nicely sharpened one with a shallow angle on it can do wonderful things.

You ought to find a new handle for under 10 or 15 dollars. and when I try to smooth up an old axe I soak it in a penetrating oil and scrub it of with some red scotch-brite. this has work for me and dos not seem to ruin any logo, I have collected a few old hatchets. feel free to re-duct-tape as needed.

you can get scotch brite at an auto parts store. if you live in Arkansas like your by-line says, you ought to be able to check out flea markets or swap meets and find a un-finished handle and make it look the way you want. They alot of hammer and axe handles in Arkansas and lot of 2nd's get sifted out to flea market peddlers for a couple dollars.

I think I have that same axe. It use to have a rubber handle. How are you planning to rehandle it?

Looks like a good project. From what I can see, the edges dont look like they need too much filing. True tempers are great axes! Take some sandpaper to that head and give it the polish it deserves! I've rehandled and reprofiled a few old axes and its great fun (just wish I could find a double bit here in oz). Hopefully no-one did what my grandad used to do to his axes when the handle broke - burn the handle out! Please take plenty of pics.

Cool!! Axe handles are fun. I'm rehandling a hammer right now. Its challenging.
