So this kind popped into my head this morning after thinking about how nice custom knife makers seem to be. and I was wondering if it has something to do with age? The generosity and kindness of every one not only on the website but also on all of the others (who shall remain nameless:)

So here is what I would like to see if you dont mind.

What is your age if you are a custom knife maker.

I'll start

Jake Hoback 28 years old going on 12.

:D
Happy thanksgiving, god bless

I am 32 years old...been making knives since I was 25 or so....I don't think it has to do with age...I think it's more the craft itself that lends itself to have great people involved.

33

Well I've had simular thoughts.
Age can very well be one of the factors, but I think that the fact that we all have a passion for a beautifull craft has to do with it as well.
The others are not seen as 'the competition' but we compliment eachother with our work.
We inspire eachother and learn from eachother.
I think that that is one of the major binding factors and creator of this positive enviroment

Josh Mason, 30 years old last month. I will always be 15 years old....lol.

Kindness and generosity is very prevalent in the knife community. It rubs off on everyone regardless of age. We are all kind to each other and are extremely generous with our methods, when so many other craftsmen tend to hold onto trade secrets.

Some non-makers and collectors here may be crusty and mean old farts sometimes, but some of the honesty/saltiness they project can be one of the kindest things you can hear as a maker.

I am a half century old. I have been making seriously since I was 30. I have only run into a couple PITA knifemakers and they were just too worried about making a sale rather than just talking knives. The kindness exhibited by knifemakers seems to cross age boundaries. I think it is more what we are exposed to. From the start I was treated with respect and was offered advice if I wanted it. It was all in a true spirit of teaching and sharing. When we are first exposed to this we will more likely continue with it. If I were treated like I was intruding and more like a competitor rather than a colleague I would have been closed minded about sharing. Just my thoughts lonely as it is.

At the end of March, I will be celebrating the 20th anniversary of my 19th birthday.

I hear ya Chuck, very well put.

Knifemakers here have helped me so much. Alot of times the only thing they didn't do was make the dang knife itself for me. I'm relatively new, and don't know everything about this game, but passing along info I've learned to a new maker/enthusiast that needs help makes me feel great. Because I've been there, and know how good that generosity and kindness feels.

34 Ive been playing with guns and knives since I was old enough to walk. My dad owns a small machine shop so that seems to mesh really well with my hobbies :D Im glad to help however I can. I skip over more posts than I do answering them though because of the sheer volume of talent on this forum. the question gets answered LONG before I ever show up. :D

42 and apparently my wife still thinks I am much younger because she is always telling me to grow up :p

And very well put Chuck.

I am way to laid back to be one of those guys that thinks I am above everyone else, I love to teach and have been teaching trades to people my whole adult life. I started out as a journeyman Lather did that for 15 years and trained lots of apprentices, then moved on to be a farrier just because I love beating steel and love horses and being my own boss. I have trained many up and coming farriers in my almost 11 years now and love watching them grow into the business. The funny thing is I have never taken money to share my knowledge and in my farrier business I actually pay them to teach them  always thought that was wrong LOL.

Made my first knife about in 2005 and with the sharing of knowledge I have grown to be the knife maker I am today and can not thank the people that have helped me enough that have got me to where I am now. So like them I share what I know and I feel good when someone uses that knowledge and does good with it.

60 years old so far, been playing with knives and swords most of my life but only been making for something like 7 years. The friendliness and generosity of all the makers I've met is truly outstanding.

Holy smokes, you guys are mere children. The good Lord has allowed me to visit his green earth for over 63 years, and most of them were some very hard lived years. (but that is my fault and I'm tryin' to do better----really I am)

I can't think of anything that I enjoy more than sharing what little I know about making knives. There are no secrets, only ideas, methods and techniques that should be shared by all who have a love for what we do.

For the record, I still don't know what I want to be when I grow up....... maybe a knifemaker, who knows.

28 here. Been making knives casually as a hobby for, i guess, 4 years, although I haven't finished any this year =/

On my 36th tour around the sun. Ive been making knives for about 4 years, but I guess Ive been carrying one since I was 8 or 9.

Ive been amazed at the generosity and openess among makers, its quality seldom seen in other professions.

55 here andmaking knives for about 7 years, been playing with them my whole life.
I was alway told you have to grow older but you don't have to grow up and I strickly adhere to that.
The kindness and generosity of knifemakers is the best.I always try and pass it on.

I'm 44, started putting kit knives together in 2007. Ground out my first blades on a 1x30 HF grinder in 2008. I too was suprised at the openness of knifemakers when I first started. I called a lot of you on the phone (I didn't have a computer then) and never found anybody too busy to answer questions or just chat. Thanks to everyone who took those calls. I made a promise to myself to always give back to newbies any way I could, and will do so where I can. I am no great wealth of knowledge by any means but am willing to share what I do know. Cheers.

31, loved knives and wanted to make them since I was a kid. I've made a few KSO's and 2 that I considering functional knives (with plenty of flaws!). I am only getting started.
