Slimming down the collection... what knives do you have that you could never sell?

Well, I've decided there are a few knives that I'd like to have, unfortunately they are expensive! So, I'm going to work at eliminating redundancy to get some new high quality knives to fill in some gaps in my collection. But there are several knives that I can never sell! My family is big on knives, so I've got several I can never sell. A few Al Mar's w/ low #'s from the 1980's. But I could never sell my low # Chris Reeve Skinner (gift from my dad when moving to Oregon). My BK7 which was the first knife I bought because of this forum! Or my Krein Bushcraft, which was a graduation present. And several other unique pieces.

I'm selling some items to pick up a Griptilian and an Al Mar SERE 2000 to fill in some gaps in my wilderness knives.

What are some wilderness knives that you could never sell?

L!

I used to have a huge collection of Busse knives(20-25) I have since sold all but my Camp Tramp, Bandicoot, orange GW and BAD. I will never get rid of those. The Tramp and Bandicoot make a perfect pair of knives....perfect. and I am looking for two others to go with the GW and BAD. I think I will look at Bark Rivers.

Many (most?) of my knives are either customs, discontinued, vintage, family heirlooms, or otherwise 'collectible'. Replacing them would range from expensive to difficult to impossible.

The only knives I would consider selling/trading are current production factory knives that I own in duplicate.

let's see:

my camillus cuda max 5.5. now discontinued.
gene ingram #12.
bob dozier K2.
karesuando scandi knife.
all my SAKs.
spydie Endura from 1979.

i could sell the other 20 or so if i had to though.:)

i suppose that i have more or less narrowed my collection down to a relative few that i intend to keep, at least until i find something that will work better.

some of my favorites are the mora #1, the opinel #7, a buck stockman, an SAK or two, and a few various other blades in a couple of sizes.

i try to live without alot of excess...just in general. i try to keep this to my knives as well, but i tend to keep a few more than i really need...

Too many to list em all but I will always have the customs from my knifemaker friends for sure :) Then there is my old Air Force Survival that will probably be buried with me. Course the family Bowie and my Uncle's Kabar aren't going anywhere either. Most of those fall in the collection catagory however. My users I'll never be without are my RAT/Ontario folder, always have a good machete such as my 12in customized Ontario or a Martindale Golok, and of late I will probably always have 1 of my Bushcraft knives. Probably a lot more around here that would never go away :)

I've thought of this often, a few that were at the top of the list a few years back have been sold:grumpy:
I will say that when I first got into knives about 6 years ago, I was more interested in trying out the latest and greatest knife, even if that meant giving up one of my favorites. I sold my beloved Benchmade D2 AFCK on eBay for $300 right after it was discontinued (I now realize it wasn't worth that price because of how much I liked it and the trips I brought it on). I sold my blue Benchmade mini-grip that was my first real knife, that definitely wasn't worth the $60 I made on it. How about the Ontario Pilots Survival knife I wanted for the first 12 years of my life, used for the next 6, and traded for I don't even remember what knife! I traded a Tom Klein custom knife (that was on this list) for a few knives, and I'm happy I did that because I actually can use the knives I got instead of just look at them!

Here is my list (for real, I won't sell any of them...)
BN551 D2 Griptilian
BM550 154CM Griptilian
Swamp Rat Ratmandu
BRKT Bravo-1
BRKT Highland Special
BM Bird and Trout knife
Spyderco CMPD2 Military
3 O1 camp knives I made (these are for my children)
A Buck 112 from my Grandpa
Benchmade 710D2

I would like to believe these are important enough blades to me, but honestly, sometimes you need money more than you need sentimental knives. Good luck to all of you guys at keeping your lists'.

I'd find it hard to sell any but if someone had my head in a vice and was ripping my finger nails out so I could only keep one it would be my SwampRat Ratmandu !!!

I love all my knives, but I would have to say the one knife that will always be with me and will hopefully go to one of my kids is my Case Canoe. I love that little knife.

I'd be hard pressed to get ride of my BK9, RC3, and Razel though :)

Asking which knife I'd keep is a lot like asking which arm I'd keep if I had the choice :) Both of 'em of course!

So thats what it gonna take to get you to sell me that RAT huh?:D

I could say everything exactly as you did with the exception of the specific knives, especially the part about "at least until i find something that will work better."

The only knife I'd absolutely need to keep would be my father's Henckels that he carried for 50 years. Then again, nobody would buy it anyway ;) All the others, while nice and while it would be tough to part with some of them, are "all just stuff" (to quote Shecky, above).

The only ones that I won't part with are a couple from my Dad before he died, a Camillus folder from the 50's, and the SAK he bought for me which was my first knife. So sentimental value rules for me! Like Mark J, nobody else would want them anyway!

As much as I like the rest of my collection, I can always replace it or live without it, although there are some that I would miss...

Only one has enough sentimental value to keep - my first purchase at age 13 - 150OT for overnighters with my buds:

The rest are tools.

I really do love my knives but there are 2 I could never sell:

My JSP/ Bladerigger kerambit... more of a promise to a very good friend than really loving the knife...

That being said the only knife that I would never part with is my NWA. Favorite knife I own hands down.

Then again there may be some I could never sell that I just don't happen to own yet;)

My attachment to knives changes when I never thought it would. I bought one of those anodized titanium BM 42A Balisongs in college. I thought for SURE I would never sell it especially since they discontinued them shortly after I bought it. But now that I've had the thing for a number of years, I'm considering selling it. That sort of thing.

The only knife I know I'll never sell is my Buck Special I bought when I was a kid. It was my first fixed blade, first real knife, and selling it would only bring me $20-30 anyways :)

I'm getting to the point where I have very little I am willing to part with. A few here and there, but that's it. About 85% of my knives aren't going anywhere...

Well, unless there was something catastrophic...

Man, I hate to say this, but....

There's not a single knife I own that would kill me to have to replace.

No, I don't WANT to sell my first forged blade, the SOG I carried in the sandbox, my Al Mar, my SAK Outrider (Since i'd just go to the store and replace it within 24 hours anyhow).

But, aside from some emotional attachment, there's nothing here I couldn't live without assuming I'd be able to make/buy other blades. And, TBH, I might be better off - you live and learn, and sometimes you learn that the "perfect" kniife is less perfect than one you would buy/make today.

I *try* for a bit of minimalism, but truth is, while organizing last night, I have over 2 dozen field knives around these days. A half dozen SAKs, various multitoools, and the kitchen knives. And the hori hori. And the hawks. And the GB forest axe. and other stuff, I'm sure.
