wow today i was watching the tube and mythbusters came on and it was about sling shots. like the ones from when we were kids and new-age ones. i wonder how small they have gotten or power full? whats your favorit kind?

mine is the original Y stick with a few good rubber bands...whats yours???

Wrist Rocket...Yup, I have one of those and a sack of 00 buckshot to chase dogs away with.:D.:D.

I used to shoot them a lot. I made one with some steel for the yolk, and was gripped with a bicycle handlebar grip. It had sugical tubing from the local fishing supply shop.

I used to be able to shoot through shoyu bottles (like 1 gal. water bottles but stiffer). I remember cutting a bottle in half when I was on th Big Island.

Sling shots are illegal here. $#%#!!!!! There are always Slings. They're an often-unknown weapon from ancient times. They take some practice in order to use effectively, but they can be used for fun or hunting small game like a sling shot can. Actually, they're capable of throwing even larger projectiles. They were once used in combat in ancient times and can be lethal.

I hear that they are supposed to throw projectiles around the size of your fist?

That's pretty crazy.

As I said above, I have a bit of experience with the sling. Best projectile would be something along the lines of a lead ball about 1 Oz. Anything much bigger really limits velocity.
The Romans used to cast their shot with cute little sayings on them like "Take this" , or lightning bolts, a practice carried on today when we write on bombs....

Contrary to what you see in movies and such, you dont twirl the thing rapidly around in little circles; best technique is a single, hard overhead motion like a reverse whip-crack, with the release at the bottom of the circle.

I use a Marksman 3060LF Laser Hawk Adjustable. I like it because you can adjust both the wrist brace and the yoke. You can also store 1/4" and 3/8" pellets in the wrist band. Note that the wrist brace and the yoke are both "above" the shooting arm so you don't reach through it to grab the handle like you do with the wrist rockets. I use mostly 1/4" pellets to drive Canada Geese out of my yard (a.k.a. "the place of pain") back into the lake. The only downside to the Marksman is that it isn't a folder and it won't fit in a pocket.

I also have a cheap folder with a wrist brace but my wrist is too thick to use it comfortably. Sometimes I stick it in my pocket for some plinking in the woods.

My brothers and I used to love our wrist rockets. A large bags of marbles kept us and the lkocal house cats occupied for a couple of days. Nothing like a good cougar hunt we used to say.

So--what myths were they busting about sling shots?

Scott

If it was the same episode I saw they were busting the myth that illegal alien smugglers were using a giant slingshot to hurl people across the border.

The mythbusters built a huge 45' slingshot out of radio towers and rubber tubing and used it to hurl Buster the crash dummy at a target. Needless to say, the myth was successfully busted.

Tell you what, if this was the preferred method of crossing the border, and they survived, then more power to them! :D

When I was a kid, slingshots were the fun way of shooting fruits down from trees. :)

I still have an old one somewhere made from a forked branch and strips of old rubber inner tubes, when I was a kid we could buy 1 kilogram bags of clay marbles at the local mercado (real cheap and excellent ammunition). I also remember some small ones in cheap plastic and rubber bands, using lead shot I once made a clean hole through a window at grandma's place (she never new how it happened....).

When I was in college in the USA, somebody made a large one from hospital tubing and a 1 gallon plastic jar (no frame, just the tubes and the ammunition holder), it took three people to operate it and it could shoot doubled water balloons several blocks away, once the police showed up after some neighbors down the hill complained about their swimming pool being used as a target, but the slingshot was never found.

When my brother was a freshman at Harvard they nailed surgical tubing to a window frame to make a giant slingshot to shoot water balloons into open windows of another dorm. They found they could reach as high as the 4th floor....

man this is why i missed this forom over the summer all the quick responces and comments and thats great im thinking about getting a new sling shot now with all this talk.....and then buy a few cheap made in asain knifes and see if i can still do my good old tricks........

We had a condo on the edge of some public land. The local cats would slink through the grass looking for mice and birds to hunt. I would use my Wristrocket to send a .36 lead ball zinging out into the tall grass near the cat. Our dogs would go absolutely wild when the cat would jump 3 feet straight up into the air. It got so bad that the dogs would go into hyper-mode whenever I picked up the slingshot. Great fun!

I have a Trumark FS-1 with the ammo storage handle. Great for plinking beer and soda bottles. :D

I have the Trumark FS-1 as well and use 5/16" steel shot in it. You can become surprisingly accurate with just a little practice. I like mine, it's fun to mess around with. I mean, for under $10.00 you can hardly go wrong.
