Slings, anyone ever make or use them?

I brought my leather working gear and paracord into work tonight and just finished fashioning myself a pretty neat simple sling. I almost took out a lightswitch across the room with a half a pack of lifesavers...although that's not exactly the potted plant I was aiming for! :p I'll try to post a pic tomorrow if I have the time. -Matt-

Simon,

I've never seen someone out throw a staff sling with a standard sling. The height of the release, the mechanical advantage and the force generated is truly amazing. Usually the first reaction a person has when they use one is a gasp. The second is a request to try it again. Marty is still finding golf balls launched into the kitchen area from 100's of yards away.

You, me and some others need to do another CT gathering and mess around with them again. We can do some side by side comparisons, play with blades along the way, swap stories and rib each other too.

I don't know, It is hard to imagine that you can generate the velocity that a staff sling generates with a standard sling. I was amazed when I got to use it at the CT gathering.
Kevin, are we going to make staff slings at the WLC, I am booked for the August 10th week

Tony,

You can count on it! You'll see some pretty effective primitive tools that week and the best part is, you'll make some of your own to take home as a souvenier. I'm glad you signed up. I'm working that week and the advanced week that carries over the following week. Hope you've been practicing that figure 4!

Sorry to hijack this thread with personal comments. To get back to the original topic, a cheap and easy way to make an expedient pouch is to use an old (please don't butcher a new boot) leather boot tongue. Wet it and form it around a rock overnight. You'll be good to go come morning when it dries.

Ilbruche and Doc-Canada, great looking sling pouches! Very ornate and well made from what I can tell! WELL DONE!!!

kev, we certainly need to do that again. i totally forgot to bring any slings with me to the last one, and i didn't realize anyone knew about them until i saw the staff sling pics from friday... oh well, there is always next.

about staff vs normal sling, i have played with both and find that generally i could throw farther with a cord sling...and larry bray (the sling distance record holder) did set his record with a cord sling...but that is a seperate matter... perhaps its because of my tendencies to load the staff sling with larger, heavier ammo, average between 4-8 ounces. i normally use stones about 1-3 ounces in my hand sling...

Back when I was a teenager (I was a pretty bad kid) I used to use slings to huck molotov cocktails...I guess I shouldn't be saying that but nobody ever got hurt and it's pretty cool to watch them sail through the air and land with a thump and a burst of fire!

Messed with them a lot as a kid never got too good at it. I remember I was messing with one one day and my Grandpa showed me how it was done. I was amazed seeing as how he was probably 80 at the time and hurled a stone with incredibly accuracy. He apparently used them a lot to harvest game as a young man.

Here's a pic of the sling I made while I was at work the other night. It now has a home with my "adventure gear". Now all I need to do is get out and practice a lot. Good thing I saved all that No.2 wash stone when I took out the landscaping! :D -Matt-
