Just getting into making a few slip joints and am trying to figure how to spring the back spacer. If you already have the liner to the profile you want in which rotation do you drill the holes? Seems the most logical rotation would be center, pivot, then spring it with the back hole. How about some help out there..........jake

I cut my spring out to fit the profile of the handle, then just bend (before heat treating) to add tension. Most makers "spring it" with the center hole.

I pretty much do what Don does if I have a pattern I am working from. If I am working something that I don't have a pattern for I use several different ways depending on what works best.

I have found that if you are doing a "one of a kind" to be sure and leave extra material on the spring so you can grind it away on the under side after the heat treat for the final spring tension. If its a copy of a traditional folder you can take one apart and simply match the spring shape and size.

What Bruce said. Spring tension created with placement of center hole in liners after heatreat with a little extra material.

Then grind to perfection....ha! or sompin like dat!
