In most, if not all, of the posts on slip joints, I see mention of the spring being flush in closed, half stop and open positions. I understand why this is desirable. What I don't understand is why it wouldn't be desirable to have the spring flush over the full range of travel. Is it desirable but hard to accomplish in practice or am I missing something that makes it undesirable?

You would be missing the "walk and talk" of a slippy if you did that.
