slip joint for field dressing deer?

I'm late on the thread but agree with everyone here. Yep, it can be done and I've done it myself. As I have mentioned before I was forced to field dress a deer with an ancient Case congress one time. Do it with that you can pretty much do it with anything. My dad used an old Frontier folding hunter for everything involved with deer hunting from the field dress, to the skinning, to the final processing. Worked just fine.

One caution: be aware of the potential of closing it up on yourself when you are reaching up inside the chest blindly. Not telling you anything you don't know, but it is something to keep in mind.

I've used my Case trapper to field dress several whitetail deer, with no problems. All you need is a finger's length of sharp steel. (somebody said that once....)

Done a lot of them with a slippie, still do on occasion, whatever happens to be in my pocket.
I actually done one once with busted bottle glass- no problems.

I was a butcher, and owned a game processing buisness for many years, and have used fixed blades for most of my life.
But when I was young I often used a Case Trapper.

My father, and all of his brothers used Case knives their whole life for Deer. My father used his Trapper for everything, and even used it to cut up his meals at the table. Never saw him use a kitchen knife.

Here you go, cow elk gutted with Buck 303 Stockman. Eye witnessed......300

It will do fine. I prefer a smaller knife on deer bc of the weight. Never have carried a fix blade in the woods. I've cleaned a deer with a blade from a broad head once. Cleaned a lot of deer and squirrels with a 885 uncle henry. After cleaning a deer or something I washed it the best I could and oiled it. Great knife by the way!

My father once gutted a deer with a 308 bullet that he beat over and snapped in half to make an edge,,,it took many hours to gut and much swearing,,,it was not pretty ,i was 5 years old and have carried the necessary ever since i was of age....FES
